Searching the following:

Madill in Monaghan & perhaps Cavan. These Madills moved to Canada by 1841. Some spread into the Detroit, Michigan area.

McMillan primarily in Tyrone. [In the States, we have a Richardson who tested Y-DNA and was found to match "Millan"/"Milling", but also other Irish families, centered around Tyrone]

Our Smiths were referred to as "Ulster Scots" in family lore; searching Smith in Ulster, but more specifically in Antrim. Our earliest, Robert Smith, settled in Cumberland County, VA in 1763. He purchased part of the James Allen land grant (Allen was of "Meadow Bridges" in Henrico County, VA).

McMillan is YDNA-R1b

Smith is YDNA-J2a4h

  • Hi,

    Thank you for your message.

Do you have any documentation that mentions a townland/parish/village or town in Monaghan, Tyrone or Antrim? One of the main places where you may be able to find informaiton on the family is in Church registers. However, as many of these are held locally it is important to know the parish name.

Do you know much about their emigration? Generally more information was given at the port of arrival rather than that of departure. If you knew what city they arrived at it may be a place to find more information-and perhaps even an exact place of origin. For immigration information in Canada check the National Archives and library of Canada at  http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/index-e.html

For immigration information in the US check http://www.archives.gov/research/immigration/

Regarding the Smiths in Ulster, unfortunately  the reality of finding documentation pertaining to births/baptisms/marriages/deaths in Ireland prior to 1800 ? particularly in rural areas ? is that they simply may not exist. Please also note that the Church of Ireland was the official church of the country and therefore the bulk of information that does survive for earlier periods is often from these registers. Once you have narrowed down the parish you will know which registers to look in.

Some websites which prove useful to you are:

The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx

The National Archives UK ? genealogy search: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/

The Public Records Office of Northern Ireland http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/family_history.htm.

    I hope that this helps.

    Kind regards,
