Hello:

I am very interested in family history, but have a hard time given the general lack of historical records for Ireland. My family was from Rosmuc and came to the US (Boston) in 1904 and in 1907 moved to Chicago.

During the 1990s my cousins went to Ireland and were able to locate one of our relatives (cool), but I believe he has passed away since then. I am incredibly interested to know if any of my relatives still live in Ireland or if anyone has any more information about my family.

Here are some names I have that were given to me by my great aunt:

Sarah Keane (b. 1860s approx) mother of Patrick Joyce  (b. 1880s approx) my great-great grandfather,  Myles Joyce, Coleman Joyce, Dudley Joyce, Bartley Joyce, Thomas Joyce, Martin Joyce and Mary Joyce.

Patrick Joyce married Margaret Joyce (he called her "Maggie from Brandy Bay.") Does any one know what this Brady Bay was? It never appears on any maps. These two came to the US in 1904.

Any information is appreciated!

Al

  • You are lucky to have some uncommon first names.  Here is the family in 1901 in Roskeeda.

    Here they are in 1911:

Maybe you can use this additional location info and a few more siblings.

Also found a clue on Margaret’s parents:

  • Cathy:

Thank you so much for this information! It is very exciting to have this information - always fun to add another line to the family tree.

I also wanted to say that I am really impressed with this reaching out initiative. Usually when I post on forums I never hear from anyone, so it was quite a welcomed surprise to get a reply so quickly with so much good information -  I really appreciate it. I'm sure this program will increase your tourism as I now have a renewed interest in coming to Galway to see if for myself.

    All the best,

  • Very cool! As I mentioned my family has been here from the early 1900s - there are literally 100s of us given we are Irish Catholic! I grew up on the Northwest side, but now live downtown.

How did you get involved with reaching out? Do you spend much time in Ireland?

    All the best,

    Alison

You are looking for Brandy Bay it is probably Brandy Harbour you are looking for. Brandy Harbour is on Lettermore Island across Killkieran Bay from Roskeeda. Its near Deereengloss and Criminagh on Lettermore Island. lhaua
