Hello I am trying to locate details of my Great Grandfather Thomas Whalen married to Annie Price both of whom stated on the 1911 English census they were born in County Galway. Thomas was born around 1859 and was living and working in Tynemouth England as a labourere at Smiths Dock. They had 10 Children 6 of whom were still living in 1911. My Grandfather William was the youngest and he was still living with them in 1911

  • Hello. Your Thomas and Ann's marriage seems elusive in Co. Galway. Forgive me if I'm wrong but perhaps Annie's birthplace in the 1911 census could be in error. There was a marriage in 1873 Tynemouth district between a Thomas Whalen and Ann Price. This link might confirm their names. http://www.northtyneside.gov.uk/marriage-register-test.shtml?mode=detai…

In 1901 there are Thomas born Ireland, Annie born Hull, Festus and William both born North Shields living in King Street.

1891 Norfolk Street has Ireland and Hull again, with more children born in North Shields.

1881 Bell Street has Thomas born Ireland. Ann, Margaret, Thomas and John all born North Shields and father-in-law Dominic Price born Ireland.

1871 has Catherine (widow) and son Thomas Whalen both born Ireland living in Walker. Also a Ann Price born Hull is working as a domestic in North Shields. A Dominic and Julia Price both born Ireland and family are in Bell Street.

I hope that this may be of some assistance.

  • hi Noone

The mention of dominic & julia price living in north shields.  The dominic i have was born around 1821 not 1834 as on 1871 census. Therefore i think this may be the wrong family, the childrens names are unfamiliar too

  • My ancestors left Galway and Offaly Counties in 1840. They went to Ontario, Canada along with a lot of other Irish families. During my research in the 1850s-1870s Canadian Census records for the counties in Ontario (Upper Canada) there are a good number of Whelans which my gg grandparents lived near and associated with. I know this may not be the specific information you're looking for but they may be additional pieces to your puzzle. It might be worthwhile to explore whether other branches of your Whelan family immigrated to Canada.

  • Hi

MY 3gr grandfathere Denis Whaelon/Whalen was born in Galway @ 1800. He married Margaret Donlon/Donnalan in 1828.  I believe their children may have been: Michaell (@1828), **William (1828), Helen (1831), Patrick (1834), Denis (1835), ?Edward (1839), Ann (1842), ?Mary (1843) Born around Ballinasloe.

Their son William was my great great grandfather, he arrived in Boston 1854, he married Eliza Dignan in 1859.  They had 8 known children.  Thier son William F Whalen (1862) was my great grandfather, he married Emily Kolb (of Germany), their son William S. Whalen (1898) married Claudia A Sulllivan (1902).  They are my grandparents

Is anyone related to any of Denis and Margaret's children or know any more of this family lline?
