I am searching for the Parish of my grandfather, Bernard McDonald, born in 1858 to James Bernard McDonald.

Bernard McDonald emigrated to Canada in the later part of the 19th century.

  • Hi Marilyn,

My name is Carmel O'Callaghan, I am a volunteer Administrator with Bailieborough & Shercock parish in Co. Cavan.

I looked at Griffiths Valuation, on AskaboutIreland, it is a free site there are 2 James one in Kildallen & another in Lavey parish, it is a record of land owners & lessors.

Is your Bernard the man that was naturalised in 1888, I found that on familysearch.org & assuming that james was born 30 yrs before his son, I looked at relevant deaths to 1920 & there are quite a few..

Are there any other family members? whom did he travel with from Ireland? was he married when he left here? where did he leave Ireland from?  If you can fill out any more details hopefully it may help us identify the parish.

There are also subscription sites Rootsireland.ie & Ancestry.com.

I hope the above is of some assistance & if I can be of any more help please let me know.

    Best Wishes Carmel

  • Dear Carmel

Thank you, I am grateful for your response.

I do know that my grandfather lived in County Cavan and left Ireland with or about the same time as his two brothers.  I understand that the two brothers went to New York and my grandfather arrived in Quebec City.

He was single upon his arrival.  The story is that he was well over six feet tall and when he arrived in the port he met a longshoreman who brought him home to meet his six foot daughter.  They were subsequently married, settled in Montreal and raised eight McDonalds.

I will check out the two sites recommended.

    Thank you for your help.

Best regards and all the best for 2013,

    Marilyn
