  • Hi,

    Thank you for your message.

When researching family history in Ireland one of the main pieces of information you need is a specific location. Most Irish record sources- church records, land records, census records- are based on specific locations. Until you know a specific location within Ireland, preferably a parish or placename, it may be difficult to do anything more with these records. Do you have any documentation that mentions a specific townland/parish/village/town? Once you have you will know what records to search.

Have you looked into Alice's transportation much? Records on transportees can sometimes offer a wealth of information. The records of the Chief Secretary's Office, which had responsibility for the Penal system, are the major Irish source of information on transportees. These records were microfilmed and a database was presented to the Australian government and can now be found in many State archives. The NAI retains copies and the database, in particular, can save a great deal of time and effort. www.nationalarchives.ie

Fortunately, Alice's surname is not that common in Ireland. If you do a search of the name on the Irishtimes surname search engine, it shows you how many Dowzer households were in Ireland in the mid 19th century. There were 8 in Wicklow. You can see these results here:

You can see a breakdown of these results by parish for a small fee. If you decide to do this it will give you some parish names to start your search with.

I hope that this is helpful. Once you know the name of the parish that Alice originated from you cans earch the church records there. Remember to post any new information that you find. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

    Kind regards,
