We believe John P. Slattery was born in 1820 or 1825; he was Catholic; and a blacksmith/laborer once he reached US.
He seems to have naturalized in New York City in 1859.
Family tradition is that both John Patrick and his (apparently much older) wife Ellen Ryan came from or around the little town of Emly, County Tipperary, Ireland. Another relative thought Ellen came from County Limerick.
We would love to have any available information about either family.

Hi,
Thank you for your message.
Do you know John and Ellen?s parents? names? If you do then maybe you could try searching for them in the Tithe Applotment Books. These are land records that were compiled between 1823 and 1837 in order to determine the amount which occupiers of agricultural holdings should pay in tithes to the Church of Ireland. Although they do not contain any genealogical information they can sometimes be used to tie a person to a specific place.

You could also try searching in the later land record called Griffith?s Valuation (1848-1864). If John or Ellen owned any property before they left, you may even find them in these records. You can search these here:

Have you tried looking into their emigration records to try to confirm place of origin? Sometimes more information was given at the port of arrival rather than that of departure. If you would like to look into their emigration a good place to start is the US National Archives at the following link:

If Ellen did not come from Emly, it may be difficult to find information on her if you do not know what parish in Co. Limerick she came from. Most Irish record sources- church records, land records, census records- are based on specific locations. Until you know a specific location within Ireland, preferably a parish or place name, it may be difficult to do anything more with these records.
Since you know the parish of origin for John, you may be able to find church records that will give you more information about him and/or his family. Most Catholic records are held locally. One website which may be helpful is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. For Emly parish follow this link:
For Church or Ireland records check: http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/.
you could also search for John, Ellen and other family members at www.familysearch.org . This is a huge database of genealogical records compiled by the Church of the Latter Day Saints,
Some other websites which you may find useful are:

I hope that this is helpful and that you are able to find some information on the family.
