• Do you know any important family dates that will help establish a timeframe for your research? E.g. birth/marriage/emigration dates
• The religious denomination of their families
• If they emigrated. If so, what do you know about their emigration?

Thanks for your reply.  I have uncovered some information on my family.    Here's what I know.  Julia Callaghan (my great-grandmother) was born in 1835 and her parents were John & Ellen Carthy Callaghan.  She married Timothy Desmond and they had seven children.  Two of those children, Julia Desmond (born 1868 & my grandmother) and Timothy Desmond (born 1872)  immigrated to Boston MA.  Birth records indicate they were born in Murragh, Cork.  Their five siblings remained in Ireland.  They were Nellie (1861), Katie (1864), Daniel (1866), Margaret (1870) and Humphrey (1874).  Many years ago I corresponded with Daniel's only child, Margaret Desmond Neville.  She gave me most of this info.  Her father Daniel inherited the family farm in Fernalough, Cork.  In the 1901 Census Julia Callaghan Desmond appears to be living with her sons, Daniel and Humphrey and 1911 Census she is visiting (living?) with her son Humphrey and his family.  I would love to go back further in John Calllaghan's and Timothy Desmond's family history.

You have a lot of great information here!

You could try using church records to find more information on John and Timothy if you have not already done so. Do you know if they were born/married in Murragh parish? If so you may be able to find their birth/marriage records there.

Most Roman Catholic records are held locally so you could try writing to the parish priest for possible assistance. One website which you may find useful however is the irishtimes where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. For Murragh follow this link:

You could also do a search for them at https://familysearch.org/  . This is a huge database of genealogical records that has been complied by the Church of the Latter Day Saints.

You may be able to find some record of John in the Tithe Applotment Books. These are land records compiled between 1823 and 1837 in order to determine the amount which occupiers of agricultural holdings should pay in tithes to the Church of Ireland. You can search these here:
