This is the first time that I have ever tried to find my ansestors and I am finding it quite dificult. I can trace my family back to John Draney Born 1758 in Down, Ireland. He married a Sarah Seaton. Draney does not even sound Irish to me. Can anyone please help me?

Thank you!

    Hi,

    Thank you for your message.

You have done very well to trace your ancestors back as far as 1758, many people often hit a brick wall before this! Unfortunately, it may be difficult to find out more about John. The reality of finding documentation pertaining to births/baptisms/marriages/deaths in Ireland prior to 1800 ? particularly in rural areas ? is that they simply may not exist. Please also note that the Church of Ireland was the official church of the country and therefore the bulk of information that does survive for earlier periods is often from these registers.

For information on Church of Ireland Registers check http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/

I did a quick Google search of the name Draney and it is not an Irish name but an English name. It could be a possibility they your early ancestors moved from England to Northern Ireland. Here is a link to the page where I found this information:

As the period that you are looking at is so early, it may be an idea to contact the Ulster Historical Foundation for assistance-however a fee may apply. Here are their contact details:

I hope that this is helpful. Best of luck with the rest of your research!
