  • Thank you for contacting me.  I have been having a difficult time figuring out how to use the site, but, though not an amateur, I am not a techie.

Dennis immigrated to America sometime in the late 1840s.  He already had relations in Auburn, Cayuga Co., NY when he immigrated.  There were relations living in Ithica, NY during WWII, but we have yet to find any of them.  He was closely related to Jeremiah, Timothy and [another] Dennis Mahoney (who were probably brothers).  My Dennis could have been an uncle or closely related cousin.  We know through family legend that there were Mahoney relations who worked on the Welland Canal and Railroad.

My Dennis Mahoney/Mahaney and his family moved along the Railroad line from Auburn through northern Ohio, settling first in Amherst and later Toledo.  Their last settlement was in Chicago, Illinois.

On Dennis' youngest son's death certificate, under  "city of birth" it states that Dennis was born in Cork., and we know from family legend that he and all of the relations came from County Cork.

A weaker legend is that Dennis traveled from Cork to Dublin where he met my 2 gr grandmother, Margaret Grimes; at some point during the 1840s, they moved to County Kerry where they took a ship to Canada.  From Canada, it was a quick hop to Auburn.

O'Mahoney name is prolific, and when I was in Ireland 15+ years ago, none of the heritage centers were able to assist.  I am hoping that you will be able to match my family history w/ other O'Mahoneys who have a similar history.  Regards, Diane in Baltimore, MD
