James McKernan, a widower, married Maria Dowling at the Pro Cathedral in 1875. I believe that she was born in Kildare in 1847, but can find out nothing else about her or her family.

Any assistance would be much appreciated. Many thanks.

CHURCH OF IRELAND:Church of Ireland parish registers for the period up to 1870-are publicrecords. Registers are available for about one third of the parishes, however many were destroyedin the Public Records Office in Dublin in 1922. Most are still held by the local clergy, althoughsome are in the National Archives of Ireland and others are in the Representative Church BodyLibrary in Dublin. A list of all surviving registers is available in the National Archives. http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/. The Anglican Record Projectis has created an index to their records: http://ireland.anglican.org/cmsfiles/pdf/AboutUs/library/AngRecord/bunclodyunionindex.pdf PRESBYTERIAN:Presbyterian registers are held in three main locations: in local custody, in the PublicRecords of Northern Ireland (PRONI) http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/family_history.htm and atthe Presbyterian Historical Society http://www.presbyterianhistoryireland.com in Belfast. PRONIhas microfilm copies of almost all registers in Northern Ireland and also lists of records held by thePresbyterian Historical Society. For the rest of Ireland, almost all records are in local custody. It candifficult to locate these as many congregations in the South have moved, amalgamated, or simplydisappeared over the last sixty years. The next thing you could do is find the counties and places in Ireland your family names are mostprevalent. Look at the website http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/ and perhapssomething will match some other clue you may have found elsewhere? If nothing turnsup ? it is advisable to try different variations of the spellings of the names. If you have a possiblefirst name you could try the Irish Census 1901, 1911 at www.census.nationalarchives.ie/ or the landvaluation record called Griffiths Valuationhttp://askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml

  • Hello Craggagh

I came across your post and have had a quick look at your query.  I'm not sure what exactly you have found already so you might have the following, but if not I hope it helps.

    Source: Churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie

Marriage of Jacobus McKernan of 14 Gt Brunswick St and Maria Dowling of Lr Dorset St on 6th May 1875 in St Mary, Pro Cathedral

Husbands parents: Francisci McKernan, Catherinae McKernan

Wifes parents: Jacobi Dowling, Catherine Dowling

Witnesses: Jacobus Coffey and Marianna Cornan

    Jacobus McKernan married Maria Dowling

    Source: Ancestry.co.uk & Familysearch.org

Civil record: James M?Kernan and Mary Dowling, 1875, Dublin North, v17 p509

    Finally, there are the following census records;

Census: 1901 Living at 39 in Drumcondra, Maria 53 and James 61 + children

Census: 1911 Living at 6 Merville Terrace, Clontarf West, Mary 61 and two sons.  No mention of James or other children.

I hope this was of help and if I can find anything else I will post again.

  • Hello Linda -

James McKernan was not listed on the 1911 census at the residence of his wife and children because he was listed in the return for St Patrick's House. He died shortly after the census was taken. St Patrick's House records reveal that he came from Swanlinbar, but I do not know the name of his parish. Mary McKernan, n?e Dowling, is listed as having been born in Kildare, but, again, I do not know the name of the parish, although I believe she was born in 1847. She died in Dedham, Essex in 1935. Suzanne, daughter of James and Mary, was married to Herbert Hughes, well-known musician and collector of Irish folk songs.

I thank you for your interest and would be grateful if you are able to find anything else out.

    John Hindle (craggagh).

  • Hi John, good to hear from you.

I looked at the 1911 census for James McKernan and it says he was from Co. Cavan.  So then I googled 'where is Swanlibar' and it came up in Cavan!  So that might take you a bit further.  Will need more time to look into Mary Dowling, so hopefully will come back to you with something.  Either way I'll let you know how it goes.

Let me know if you find anything else yourself.

    Bye for now.
