My ancestor John Massy was born 1/12/1801, Glenwilliam, Ballingarry, Co limerick. He married Ann..? in 1822. His parents were, George & Lucinda Massy. John was called the "tinman of Nenagh", I presume because he was a drummer. He enlisted in the 22nd Foot regiment at Dublin in 1824 & he & his wife went to India, with their 4 sons, Thomas, Joseph, John & William. John died in Bombay in 1846 & his son John died a year later. Joseph was my 2x great grandfather. I am interested to find out the surname of John Massy's wife Ann.

  • Thankyou for your comment, John.

I have the Church Baptism Record for William Massey, first son of John & Ann Massey. He was born 2nd April 1821 & baptised 11th April 1821, Parish/District Rathkeale, co Limerick, Church of Ireland. The father's occupation is recorded as The Police & unfortunately the mother's surname is not mentioned & there are no sponsors names. So I presume they married about 1820, in that same district.

I have a reply to a letter my aunt sent to the Irish Palatine Assoc in 1992 in which the person found this same record, but was unable to find the marriage record of John & Ann.

Their second son, John was born 18/7/1823 at Dromcolliher, Joseph was born at Plymouth, England, about 1830, & Thomas was born 1831 at Barbados.

John [snr] joined the 22nd Cheshire Regiment some time after his son William's birth in 1821, when he must have spent some time in Nenagh. But it would seem they would have married in Rathkeale.

Massy is the spelling on John's 1801 birth record.

    Regards,

    Linda

  • Linda

You might also try contacting the Federation of British in India Society in case Ann's surname is recorded in their records from an obituary or other documentation. See www.new.fibis.org/

  • Thankyou, Jill, I am a member of Fibis & I had not thought of looking for an obituary. Will look at that.
