I am looking for information regarding my great great grandfather Michael Rooney.  He was born in Ireland about 1832.  I don't know the county or parish.  He immigrated to New York around 1851.  Parents were Michael and Anne Rooney.  Any information would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi

    Thank you for your message.

    Do you know much about their emigration? The dates, the reason why they left, who they may have travelled with?..etc..Generally more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at (e.g. Liverpool, New York, etc.), this could be a good place to find more information. -And perhaps even find out an exact place of origin.

    Do you know his religion? Most Catholic records are held locally - One site which might be of use is - http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/ - where you can ?browse? an overview of available records per county. If you have any difficulty, you could try writing to the parish priest for possible assistance. Church of Ireland parish registers for the period up to 1870-are public records. Registers are available for about one third of the parishes, however many were destroyed in the Public Records Office in Dublin in 1922. Most are still held by the local clergy, although some are in the National Archives of Ireland and others are in the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. A list of all surviving registers is available in the National Archives. http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/.  The Anglican Record Project is has created an index to their records: http://ireland.anglican.org/cmsfiles/pdf/AboutUs/library/AngRecord/bunclodyunionindex.pdf

    I  researched my second great grandfather using Ancestry.com.  He was born somewhere in Ireland around 1832. Sometimes I see his name as Micheal ( as opposed to Michael)  Rooney.   He was Roman Catholic but  I do not know the name of the parish they were part of or even the county they lived in.  His father (my third great grandfather) was also named Michael was born in Ireland around 1806.  His mother's name was Anne (1809).  He was one of 8 siblings.  Siblings names were,  Anne (1825), Thomas (1826), John (1829), James (1831), Bernard (1835), Mary (1837) and William (1840).  I believe I may have found him on the 1841 Scotland census so his family may have moved to Dunbartonshire, Scotland after the birth of the last sibling in 1840.  In 1854, he departed from Liverpool and arrived to New York.  He lived in New York (Queens County) until he passed around 1905.

    I would like to find out more about his roots in Ireland.  I am planning to visit Ireland in July, 2013.

    Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you.

  • I am hoping someone might know  Edward Rooney who was born in Hilltown, Dunboyne, Co. Meath on 6th Oct. 1878 ; he was one of 7 siblings; his father John Rooney was my great grandfather's only brother;  and John Rooney of Hilltown was evicted from of his land in Hilltown, I have found a cutting in the Freemans' Journal; It appears he was an excellent farmer c. 1881

    As the 1926 census are not open yet to the public it is difficult to trace Edward; I do believe that he lived in Dublin and may have died in the 1960's. I have checked the newspapers for his death, and found a few; so I am not sure;  He also had a sister Elizabeth - Lily who was a teacher and  unmarried and again I believe she died in the 1960's.

    As I have gathered a vast amount of research on this family, I would not like to leave Edward out; I think he may have been married

    Please if anyone knows anything of this family please concact me;

    Mary O'Connor
