Looking for information on Bernard (Loughan) or Laughlin family b. abt 1770 d. before 1841, had three sons Henry b. 1798; John b. 1805; and William Edward b. 1809 wife was Alice Carvel. My 3x great grandfather John Laughlin immigrated to Canada some time before 1832. I have no information before Bernard. Some of the information I have says they lived in Kilkenny as well?
Thank you,

Hi Laura,
Thank you for your message.
Have you tried looking in Church records for information on Bernard and family? Unfortunately it may be difficult to find Bernard?s birth record as the reality of finding such documentation in rural Ireland prior to 1800 is that they simply may not exist. As the Church of Ireland was the official church of the country the bulk of what does exist can often be found in these registers. For information on Church of Ireland registers check:
http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/. The Anglican Record Project is has created an index to their records: http://ireland.anglican.org/cmsfiles/pdf/AboutUs/library/AngRecord/bunclodyunionindex.pdf
Most Catholic records are held locally, however according to the Irish Times website Catholic records for Aghagallon do not begin until 1828. You can see this here:
Family Search has a large collection of church records available online, so it may be worth your while to do a search there:
You could also try searching for the family in the Tithe Applotment Books. These are land records were compiled between 1823 and 1837 in order to determine the amount which occupiers of agricultural holdings should pay in tithes to the Church of Ireland. Although Antrim is not available online, you could search for the family in Kilkenny records to see if you can confirm that they lived there. You can search the Books here:
http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp
There is a later land record (1848-1864) called Griffith?s Valuation also. It may be an idea to searh this to see if you can find any of the brothers who remained behind. You can search this here:
http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/
Have you tried looking into John?s emigration? Generally more information was given at the port of arrival rather than that of departure, so this may be a place to find more information-and maybe even where he lived before he left. For immigration records in Canada check the National Library and Archives at http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/index-e.html

Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.
