My great great grandfather Edward Patrick Griffith was born in the Gaeltacht in County Mayo in 1834.  How much of County Mayo was Irish-speaking in the 1830s?  I'm trying to narrow my search by that piece of information!

  • All of Connacht is considered Gaeltach area (Irish language speakers).

Connmara, in Co Mayo, is a protected area of Irish speakers. Their first language is Irish.

  • Griffiths in Mayo on the Tithe Applotments 1823-1837 were in Ballindine

Griffiths seem to be in South West Mayo in 1850's Griffiths Valuations

Irish speaking areas  even now would be Tourmakeady, Achill, Erris, and some other remote areas in Mayo.

1830 would be pre-famine and a lot of the Irish people would be using Irish as their main language, they were discouraged to do so by the Landed Gentry (Landords and State), have you found any ship lists that may indicate the village of origin.

If you search Griffiths Valuations below and see any name you are famiiar with you can see where the townland  is on the Map section.

Do you have any other information to add on the family that might help locate their origin.?

  • Wow!  Thank you so much for that information!!!  I thought I had search the Griffith's Valuations but with no luck and there comes your email with some Griffiths!  I am thrilled!  I will look through the links you gave me more carefully....

I am coming to County Mayo with 2 sisters and my daughter in June....thank you again so much.

We don't have any other information about EPG.  I have checked his marriage certificate (San Francisco), his Naturalization papers here, his death certificate (filled out by his Irish wife) and NO TOWN IS LISTED ANYWHERE!   I have his birthday, that he grew up speaking Irish and came over with an Irish bible, and had many family members who were priests.....seems to me like Griffith priests might be a place to look!

Any other ideas you might have??:)

Who are you and where do you live, if I may ask....and how is it you are on this site helping people like me!?

    warmly, Catherine

I live in Castlebar which is the county town of Mayo, my home town is Westport, so would have some knowledge of the area.

This link shows all the Griffith families in Ireland

8 Families in Mayo, and 4 in Galway which is a bordering county and to date has Gaeltacht townlands. - Just enter the surname in the search field.

There is a child  aged 7 Edward Griffith living in Claremorris in 1901 Census, a name is often carried through the generations.

..And three with Edward in the family in 1911

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/results.jsp?census_year=19…

The family in Brownhall Demense are the same as the one in 1901 in Ballynew, they had 10 children and 9 living so little Mary must have passed away between the Census.

I am not suggesting that these are your family but you can use the links to the Census to search further.

We have recently set up a Genealogy Group here in Mayo.

If you are on facebook you or you daughter could ask to join the page and some of the members from Mayo there may be able to answer your queries.
