I have established my grandparents, Patrick Gorman (1873-1940) and Mary McGeough. Patrick had a brother John and sister Mary (Minnie) Kilroy. Patrick, a master tailor, and his family moved from Keady to Dublin about 1914. No information on John.
I believe their parents may have been Patrick Gorman and Mary Hanlon.
I'm pretty sure Patrick had 1st cousins Barney, John and Mary Gorman.
Barney (1864-1949) went to Chicago about 1881 and I know his history from there, but not where he was born or whom his parents were. Barney's brother John (1860-1933) moved to Kilkenny about 1896 and worked at Smithwicks Brewery, married Mary Cody. His marriage record says he was a widow and father's name was James. John retired in 1913 , then ran Gorman's China Shop on High St Kilkenny. Mary moved to Kilkenny with brother John.
So, I am hoping some information on James Gorman, a farmer, who died before 1898 may help me find more info on my grandfather's family ( Patrick, John and Mary) and their parents. Was James Gorman a brother of the Patrick Gorman who married Mary Hanlon?
On the cousin's side (Barney, John, Mary) , there is some indication that the name Catherine Sweeney is relevant. The name James also resurfaces in Barney's descendants.
On my grandmother's side, McGeough, Mary (1876-1928) had a sister Elizabeth who married a Joyce from Mayo in 1913. The parents of Mary and Elizabeth were John McGeough and Mary Murphy.

Hi,
Thank you for your message.
Have you tried looking at civil registration records for information. Civil registration began in Ireland in 1864, so if James was born after this date you should be able to find his birth record. You may also be able to find Patrick?s birth record in these records. These should give you information on their parents? names.
Civil records are availabe from the General Register?s Office in Dublin. Here is a link to their website:
http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm
You can search the indexes to these registers here:
https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1408347
Once you have the parents? names you can then try searching in Church records for inforamtion on them. Most Catholic records are held locally so you may have to write to the parish priest for possible assistance. One website which you may find useful is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. For parishes in Armagh follow this link:

For information on Church of Ireland records check: http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/.
Family Search also have some church records available online so it may be an idea to search here: www.familysearch.org
You could also try searching the census records from 1901/1911 for information. These are available here:

I hope this is helpful. Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.
