On finding a student register list for an uncle in the year 1910 at the Ballyhaise Agricultural College it stated that his previous education was at a National School in Ballyhahill, Newcastle West. The writing was  a bit difficultt to make out as it was quite light. I looked up on the net about a national school in this area but the shcool was opened in 1959 which is much later than when my grandfather and uncle and their other siblings would have attended school. Is it possible to look up some records from the time they might have attended school. The first child was born 1890 and the last child born 1897. The surname is Bridgman and Thomas is the one who attended the Agricultural College who was born 1890. I am not sure when they would have started their education at a school if they did indeed attend a school. The other children were Robert, Mary or Maeve, Bridget or Bride, James (my grandfather) and Edward or Ned Bridgman.

Any help or suggestions gratefully appreciated. Many thanks in advance

  • For a list of the National Schools in Newcastle West as of 31 Dec 1902, see the Irish National Education Board's book "Annual Report of the Commisioners Vol 70" pages 164-165 on Google Books at http://tinyurl.com/dxs8m8c

  • Many th anks for this. What age would children have started school back then? As the oldest was born in 1890 and the youngest 1897 i wonder if they would have attended the National School in Ballyhahill. The places on the net that i have searched for and the links that have been suggested dont really tell me much. Many thanks

  • You are welcome!  I don't know particularly what age children started at Ballyhahill, but can tell you that after looking at the School Registers for Christian Brothers School in Co Limerick published online at The Limerick City Council website http://www.limerickcity.ie/DigitalArchives/PrivatePapersandBusinessCollections/ChristianBrothersSchoolsLimerick1856-1925/  that I found children in those registers who were enrolled as young as 4 years old.  Also I know that "Angela's Ashes"  author Frank McCourt's brother Malachy McCourt began attending school in the city of Limerick when he was only 4 as well - so they could start fairly young.
