My 2x great-grandfather, Bernard Quigley, was born in Clones, Monaghan 1 March 1832. His parents were Patrick and Ellen (Kelly) Quigley. He came to the US in 1847 through New Orleans and settled in St. Louis. He died and is buried in St. Louis, MO.

He married Ellen McManus (1837-1893) who was born In Rosslea, Fermanagh in St. Louis in 1852. She came to the US with her sister, who I believe was named Sarah. Sarah was born about 1820 and died in St. Louis in 1877. She is buried with an Edward McManus, who may have been a brother.

Bernard was a shoemaker. The family story is that the Quigleys and McManuses were distantly related. There was an Arthur Quigley who lived to be 105. A Jack McManus founded a mill in or near Clones.

My daughters and I will be visiting Ireland in August and would love to be able to make some family connections to people or places in Clones or Rosslea.

  • Hi, my name is John Corr and I live in Dublin, Ireland. I am originally from Clones - pronounced  CLO-NESS. This town is on the border between Southern Ireland and Northern Ireland, ie Counties Monaghan and Fermanagh. The parish of Clones includes large areas of Co. Fermanagh and in earlier years Roslea and Clones were documented in the same church records. One of the best web sites available is www.clairesancestry.com which provides a lot of detail on various families as well as parish records and other very usefull links. I hope this is of use to you and please let me know should you find family connections. I have found that in such a small rural community, almost every family has a link to each other. Good Luck.
