I have been researching my family tree and have traced the family back to Cork on my Mother's side but lost the trail.  My Great-Grandfather was Patrick Sullivan born   about 1837.  My great Grand Mother was Bridget Mulvey probably born Jan 1838.  Both came from Cork but I dont know where.  They may have been Married prior to leaving Ireland.  Both were Catholic.

Based on US census Information I think that at least Bridget left Ireland in or about 1864.  They both settle in Cincinnati, Ohio where they had three children: Joesph in 1874, Jerry in 1877 and my grandmother Mary Agnus in 1881.

Patrick died in 1882 and Bridget in 1913.

Any help in identifying my ancestry or family history in ireland would be greatly appreciated.

  • Bob, thanks for the reply but its not a match.  My Patrick Sullivan married Bridget Mulvey not Bridget Murray.

  • At a time when illiteracy was common, people were at the mercy of whoever recorded the events. If the person recording the event was from a different area/country they would simply put down what they thought they heard. There are thousands, if not tens of thousands, who passed through places like Ellis Island who left with a surname quite different to the one they arrived with. You have to be flexible with spellings since names were spelled differently over centuries. Graham,Grimes,Grymes,Greams were just some of the names used for the same family 1580 - 1880. In my own family I struggled to find a Thomas Graham m. to an Elizabeth McVitty, eventually found it transcribed as Mavety because the Mc looked more like Ma. I had to check the original before I discounted it -luckily for me I could see it was the entry I was chasing.

Most of the online searches are based on transcribed names not the originals, so be careful not to discount something because it is not an exact match - you may be throwing away the entry you are looking for.
