Interested in finding more information of Allen GILES (abt1798-1869), farmer of Corbally and his wife Elizabeth BENNETT possibly of Templemore. The name Ferdinand features often in the family.  Wish to discover parents of each.

  • Hi

I live about 4 to 5 miles from Corbally which is just outside Roscrea town. The Bennett's lived on the Templemore rd from Roscrea.

They lived and owned land in the townlands of Camlin, Gortmullin and and Derrymore in the 1850s. Their names were William, George, James and Theophilus.

I got this info from the Griffith's Valuation records.

If you take a look at the 1901 and 1911 census that are free on line. Go to the DED of Roscrea and townland of Gortmullin and you will find the 2 familes of Bennett's James and William.

Allen Giles owned land in Derrymore on the Templemore Roscrea rd in the 1850s

In the census 1901/1911 they had moved to the townlands of  Boolabaun in the next parish of Bourney, 2 families live there in 1901 and 3 families 1911. To look them up go to DeD Bourney East and townland Boolabaune.

Both Familes were Church of ireland  and Farmers. Their descendants are still in the area today.

  • Hi there,

I noticed the reference to Bennetts living around Roscrea. I am researching a Sarah Bennett (also known as Sarah Hickey) who in 1849 reportedly left Roscrea as an "Irish orphan girl" for Australia. Her father was John Bennett, a farmer, and her mother was Mary Anne Gleeson (or Glissane). In other places Sarah is said to have lived in Nenagh, not that far away. Sarah was my g-grandmother and was likely in a workhouse before leaving Ireland. I'm Australian but have recently been hunting around Roscrea/Nenagh areas for leads. Love to hear if this rings any bells.
