I am looking for information about the parents of William Allen, b 1850 Portinode Kesh, baptized in Tubrid Church.

William's father is named John and his mother is Ellen Loane.

Ellen was the widow of a man named Mills when she married John.  After John died, Ellen married Robert Sproule.

John may have been born in Halfwayhouse near Paisley, Scotland and may have lived in Castlederg, Tyrone before he settled in Portinode.  He may be related to Robert Allen.  He may have been the widower of Mary Anne.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I presume this is your family?

The Tubrid Church transcripts show a William b. 24 Feb 1850 in Portnode but list parents as John and Emma. However when Catherine was born in 1852 parents are listed as John and Ellen. Previous entry possibly a simple transcription error.

John and Ellen married in 1840.

A John Allen wife Mary  was in Portinaode in 1832 when he had a son John. There is also a James Loan wife Ellen having children at the same time.

The problem is how to link John in Portinode to John b. in Scotland.

I will see what else I can find out about Portinode.

In the meantime attached are the Tubrid transcripts.

  • Hello Mr Graham,

Yes, your reseach is correct.  I, too, am having difficulty finding John before his marriage to Mary.  My grandfather wrote a reminiscence before he died in which he stated his belief that John was from Halfwayhouse.  Although, I did find this posting which has sent me in a different, and so far, futile, direction:

“One of my maternal great-great-great-grandfathers, John Allen, reportedly moved to Portinode townland in County Fermanagh, Ulster from the Castlederg area, County Tyrone. On January 14, 1840, he married my great-great-great- grandmother, Eleanor "Ellen" Loan Myles, a widow from Drumhullen parish, County Fermanagh and a daughter of James Loan, at the Drumkeeran parish church in northwest County Fermanagh. Afterward, they resided in Portinode townland, which is near Boa Island. Their first child, George Allen, was one of my maternal great-great-grandfathers. I live in San Diego, CA, USA and have many paternal and maternal cousins in England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.”

Your offer of assistance is very kind.  Any suggestions you might have would be greatly appreciated.

I am interested in the surname Allen in Ireland, please see the below information and reply if you or someone you know would have interest in participating.

The ALLEN y-DNA Project & The ALLEN Guild of One Name Studies

The Allen DNA Project is partnering with the Allen Guild of One Name Studies in an exciting new Research Endeavor. The Allen DNA Project is a USA based group, but is very interested in expanding our membership to a world-wide audience by actively seeking out Allens from England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Ireland, Mainland Europe, Canada, Australia, New Zealand or anywhere else on the planet. Additionally, any spelling variation of the Allen surname is welcome: Allan, Allyn, Allin, etc.

To this point, FREE yDNA 12 marker tests will be made available to any males carrying the Allen surname and residing outside the United States who are willing to join the project and participate in the testing. This involves no blood or needles, only a cotton swab rubbed on the inner cheek.

The only requirement for a free yDNA test is a known Allen/Allan (any spelling) lineage to at least the participant’s Great Grandfather Allen/Allan (any spelling) in any country. Additionally, The Allen DNA Project is setting aside a specific Sub-group within the Project with a full commitment of assistance from Allen Project Co-Administrator Dr. Eric Allen who will be overseeing this specific International Sub-group.
