My known ancestor John Harnett born 1794 in Ireland was said to be a native of Lismore, however the only baptism I could find online is for Aghada parish and the parents are noted as Maurice Harnett and Mary Hanning and the address is Glanturkin.   I could find no marriage record for them but  did find a gravestone inscription in Keilleagh graveyard for Maurice Harnett - died 22 Sep 1836 age 70 yrs. His address was given as Monagurra, Co Cork.  Notes: Erected by Patrick Hartnett

I noted on Google Maps that these two communities are not that far apart.

Would appreciate hearing from anyone with a connection.

  • Hi Randy,

I will see if i can find out any further information on the Hartnetts in Killeagh Parish that are buried in the old graveyard but there are no records apart from the names on the headstones.

You mention that John was born in Lismore parish and that would be in County Waterford not Co. Cork so i am wondering if the man you found in Aghada Parish is the same person. The marriage records for Aghada Parish as available from the Mallow Heritage centre at a cost!!!!! and be aware of the costs are down as dating from 1785. The records from Cloyne date from 1791 and Monagurra is part of Cloyne parish now but it may not have been back in the early 1800's

Have you any other records of John? Census records, Naturalisation papers, shipping records,  gravestone readings and paper reports of his death. These have given velauble information as regards the place of origan on numerous occasions.

    Regards for now. Anne.

  • Hi Anne.

I think you missed something.  John was said to be a Native of Lismore, Co Waterford however I could find only one baptism record for 1794 which was in the parish of Aghada.  The parents of that John were Maurice and  Mary (Hanning) Harnett or Hartnett.   The only Maurice I could find old enough to be the father was from the gravestone inscription for the Maurice burried at Killeagh graveyard.   Since these two places Aghada and Killeagh are not far apart I asked if there might be a connection.

  • Hi Randy,

I do not think i missed anything. The reason you found the Baptism for John in Aghada for 1794 is that Aghada and Cloyne records are the oldest in the Diocese of Cloyne. Most of the Parish registers date from the 1820's after Catholic Emancipation. Some of the towns may date from the early 1800's but there are no records available before those dates.

I see on the waterfordcoco.ie website that the records for Lismore date from1820 for Baptisma and 1822 for weddings, so it looks like you will have no luck there either.

State registration only dates from 1864.

There are a number of Hartnett graves in the Killeagh graveyard with a 2nd Maurice but it looks as if it was not possible to read the stone when they were recorded in 1972.

It reads Here Lieth the Body of

    Maurice Hartnett who

    Departed This  Life the 23

    Day of August 17-- aged

    (42) years

As regards the John you found in Aghada Parish i wonder if the headstone in Inch Graveyard in Aghada Parish which is available on www.historicgraves.ie and reads as follows is the John. It reads

Erected by Daniel Hartnett in memory of his father Maurice Hartnett who died May 23rd 1806 Aged 60

Also his brother John who died July 4th 1818 age 24.

As regards Aghada and Killeagh being fairly close. It would take up to a half an hour by car to get there at the moment and going back to the 1800's where only means of transport was walking, cycling or maybe a pony and trap and would have been quite a journey.

Have you any other information from over there? I have found on numerous families that i have gotten a lot more  information from records there then what i have been able to get here.

Sorry i can not offer any further information.

    Regards for now. Anne.
