I am looking for any informaton on Patric Kivel born around 1832 son of Michael.  He left Ireland and married in Ashton under Lyne, Lancashire 1868 but was already a widdower.  He also had family in Barnsley Yorkshire and any information would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,

    Thank you for your message.

Unfortunately, it may be difficult to find more information on Patric without a more exact place of origin.  Most Irish record sources- church records, land records, census records- are based on specific locations. Until you know a specific location within Ireland, preferably a parish or placename, it may be difficult to do anything more with these records.

Do you have any documentation belonging to the family that mentions any place name-a townland/parish/village/town or even a county? This documentation may include unofficial documents such as letters, diary entries, family bibles, photographs, or official documents such as UK civil registration records, census records, wills etc. You may find the UK National Archives websites useful for looking up such records:

    http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/

Civil registration only began in Ireland in 1864, so if Patric happened to get married between 1864 and 1868 you may be able to find his marriage record in civil records. I did a search of  the indexes to these records and found a marriage certificate for a a Patrick Kevill in 1865 in Boyle, Co. Roscommon.

The indexes to civil records give very little information however so you may want to obtain the actual record for more information and to see if this could be your Patric. Civil records are available from the General Register?s office in Dublin, here is their website:

For information on how to get these records go to http://www.irish-genealogy-toolkit.com/Irish-civil-registration.html

You could also try searching for Patric in the church records that are available online, in order to find his parish of birth:

www.familysearch.org has a huge database of genealogical records including some birth and marriage records from Ireland.

http://www.irishgenealogy.ie/index.html Church records are currently being uploaded here free of charge. However as this is an ongoing project only some counties have been uploaded so far: Dublin, Kerry, Carlow and parts of Cork.

www.rootsireland.ie have a vast collection of Irish church records, however you have to pay to use this site.

Some other websites that you may find useful in your research are:

The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/

The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx

The Public Records Office of Northern Ireland http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/family_history.htm

    Irish Times: http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/

I hope that some of these links are useful. Remember to post any new information that you come across as the more you post the more likely it is that our volunteers may be able to help you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

    Kind regards,
