I believe my family must have originally moved from Scotland to Ireland with my great grandfather then returning; it's the part where the family lived in Ireland that fascinates me as I have so little information.

Does anyone know of either a Forbes or Mackenzie Forbes family?

    Hi,

Thank you for your message.I hope that someone with information makes a connection with you.

Do you know, roughly, when your ancestor?s lived in Ireland? You can use the Irish TImes surname search engine to check how many households had the surname Forbes in Ireland during the mid-19th century. It shows you how many households in each county, however you have to pay a small fee to see a breakdown by parish:

Unfortunately, without more information it will be difficult to narrow down a place of origin further.Have you tried looking through all documentation pertaining to the family-both official or unofficial-to see if there is mention of any place name? This can include census records, birth/marriage/death records, wills, letters, diary entries.

It may be an idea to also contact the Ulster Historical Foundation for assistance-however a fee may apply. enquiry@uhf.org.uk

If you have any other information that you can post please do so here. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

    Kind regards,
