Trying to trace the birth date of my Great Grandfather Philip McGahan who died in Cootehill in 1915.

Philip left Cootehill during the 1870's and lived for a time in Manchester, England where he married and had two boys and a girl. After the death of his wife  Philip returned to Cootehill with his youngest son, William McGahan. Philip is then thought to have married Mary Ann Smith. Philip, Mary and William are shown in the 1901 census as living at House 14 Drumrooghill in Cootehill.

I think Philip was born between 1845 and 1850. On his marriage certificate to his first wife his father name is shown as John McGahan, and proffession as labourer.

My Grandfather William (Willie) went on to marry Margaretta O'Reilly and they had six children and they lived in the Gate House Lodge, Bellamont Estate. Willie died in 1945 and is buried somewhere in the Middle Chapel graveyard. At some time between 1948/1950 my Grandmother moved to England with her youngest son Brendan McGahan.

Any information on the McGahan family would be much appreciated.

  • Hi Chris,

Civil registration records are available from the General Register Office (GRO). These start from 1864. You can access the website here:http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm, which is no help in finding Philip.

Have you checked familysearch.org, you may find more family & information there.  Did Philip use 2 names?

I live not too far from Cootehill & if I get a chance & will try and go there next week & look at the headstones, hopefully there is one.

I looked up the local phone book but there is no McGahan's listed in Cootehill, though not everyone lists their numbers.

Have you located all the birth certs of the 6 children did they all move to England?.

Search any prayer books, old letters, photos etc, you may get more names & addresses, memorial cards are a great source of information.

You can also read obituaries in The Anglo Celt at

irishnewsarchive.com it is a subscription site & addictive, sometimes you would get mention of relatives in political & sporting references particularly if someone died & they were passing on their condolences to a relative who as on their committee.

Let me know how you get on &  I will see what I can do also.  Failing all I will ask people who lives in Cootehill, have you ever visited?  I dont where  Drumrooghill is..

    Best Wishes Carmel O'Callaghan
