My name is Robert Tully.I have nothing but 1 piece of paper to call my family tree.It tells me that my Tully name goes back to my Great Great Grandfather Patrick Tully and  his wife,my Great Great Grandmother Catherine Gaffney. They had a son named Edward Tully, born Nov,1873 in Cavan County.Edward Tully later married Ellen Gaynor, born 4/6/1876 also in Cavan County.Edward and Ellen became my Great Grandparents.Ellen Gaynor's parents were named Daniel Gaynor and Mary Conaty. Now,My Great Grandparents Edward and Ellen at some point left Cavan County and came to the U.S.A having a son,my Grandfather Edward P.Tully born 7/1/1902 in NY City.On 11/22/1921 Edward P Tully married Irene Crinnion. My Grandmother Irene was born 2/20/1898 in NYCity. My father Robert J.Tully born 5/2/1927 gave me this paper. He never met his father Edward P.Tully who passed away 3/24/1927.I'm looking for any Documents,Birth,Death Certificates, anything to help me confirm the information I have. Also I'd love to find any living relatives I might have in Cavan County or Ireland for that matter. My name is Robert Tully and my e-mail is omaoltuile@msn.com

  • Hi Robert,

I looked up familysearch.org & found this, looks like a brother of Edwards, if you are near a Family search, they will order the microfilm & you can print up the cert, it should give you a townland, which is the main clue you re missing.  I will search further for you Regards Carmel O'Callaghan

  • Robert, I did further searches on familysearch.org on Catherine Gaffney & seperately on Patrick Tully, as registeration started in 1864 I found the following reference which matches the 2 names

    https://familysearch.org/search/record/results#count=20&query=%2Bgivenn…

so again if you order film 101251, volumn 13 page 68 for the year 1871, hopefully the details will match the birth cert for Thomas Tully, that I advised you about.

Robert, I searced for Ellen Gaynor & this is it...she was born in Pullabawn, Co Cavan

I searched for her parents in 1901 Census & did not find them, I did find this

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Cavan/Moynhall/Pallaba…, Daniel may be her brother.

I had a quick search on Ellis Island site, but could not find them on the passenger lists, you might also like to try Castlegarden.org.  Look for their naturalisation papers also.

Do you think Edward & Ellen married in Ireland?

If we can find, their townland, we can move further on this.

Please try the above suggestions & let me know how you got on.  There are other places you can search eg Ancestry.com, rootsireland for certificates, they are subscriptions sites.

  • Hi Robert,

Go into Familysearch.org.  it is a site owned by the Latter Day Saints ( Mormon)  they have the largest data online that is free, covering Births Deaths & Marraiges.  Have you anyone that can help you?

They have centres all over the world & I imagine in US they would have more.  On the first page I sent you, you may have to scroll across the page to see what I copied.  I will try and copy it again, below.  If you start with that & take little steps, you will get there.

  • Hi Robert,

To read messages, I look at my account at top of page & then go to track, that way I just get the ones I deal with.

I think the best advice for you would be to contact Co Cavan Library, they can do all the searches for you & they will advise you of the relavant fees, their details are below.  Regards Carmel
