I am a descendant of John McTiernan, Sr. (1817) and his son John McTiernan Jr. (1847), who emigrated to the U.S. from Co. Leitrim in 1890. Last listed was: Townland of Origin - Greaghnafarna, County - Leitrim, Barony - Drumharue, Civil Parish - Killanummery, Catholic Parish - Killanummery, Diocese-Ardagh, PLU - Manorhamilton, Probate District-Ballina, Registrar District-Drumharie, 1911 District-Electoral Division-Yugan.   I would like to connect with McTiernan descendants of my great-great grandfather and great-grandfather as listed above. I would be most grateful for ANY information you at provide! We are all still very close as McTiernan cousins here in the USA and I travel to Ireland as often as I cBDan as it truly is where my heart resides. I would love to connect with a living relative in Ireland.

    Hi,

    Thank you for your message.

Have you tried looking in the 1901/1911 census records to see if there were any McTiernan?s still in the area at that time? The census record can give some really good information. You can search them here:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

It may be an idea to also place this message in a more local forum in the hope that any possible relatives still in the area see it and make contact with you.

Some possible places you may be able to do this are:

    Connacht Tribune: http://www.galwaynews.ie/connachttribune

    Leitrim Observer: http://www.leitrimobserver.ie/news

    Leitrim Community Forum: http://leitrimcommunity.com/contact-the-forum

I hope that this this suggestion is helpful and that you are able to connect with somebody in Ireland before your next visit! Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.

    Kind regards,

  • My family also comes from the same area, however, there are so many it is like finding a needle in a haystack. My great grandfathers name was James McTernen married to Mary McHugh. The family members that came to the US changed the name to Tierney and moved to Fieldon  Township, Watonwan County, Madelia, Mn. The brothers and sisters that came were Tom, John, Peter, Frank, Pat, Hugh, Mary and Bridget. Michael came and then returned to Ireland. Another brother Eugene (Owen) remained in Ireland and. I haven't found anything on him, other than he might have moved to London. I am open to any and all searches related to McTernen or McMorrow.

I will keep you posted on anything I find.

  • I am interested in McTiernans in Philadelphia, PA.
My ggreataunt, Mary McCloskey married a Patrick McTiernan in Philadelphia, PA in 1860.

The writing on the marriage register is somewhat hard to read, so it could be McTiernan or McTernan.

I can't find either name in the US Federal Census; it's likely that one or both of them died in between censuses, as there were a lot of deaths in the 1860s, leaving children orphans with no adults to take them in.

    Does this resonate with anyone?

I am answering this post because this is the first time I've seen McTiernan spelled as McTernan.

    Thanks!

  • I looked for McTiernen because it seemed a logical match to Tierney and then I found family in Ireland that were actually McTernen.

Unfortunately, I can't be of much assistance since our family did not come until a little later, and landed Ellis Island.

  • My McTiernans were in the Famine wave of immigrants - 1845-1860. No Ellis Island or CastleIsland then.

    Thanks for the reply!

  • My McTiernans are from the neighbouring town land to Creaghnafarna and still live in that area. I have a number of McTiernans from that time and am still working on piecing them together...
