My cousin and I are planning a trip to Ireland this summer. We were hoping to find our heritage location.  Great Great Grandfather John Dennis McMillin, born June 6, 1831...according to family lore, in Ireland. I do not know where in Ireland, but I recently found a reference to 'Ulster Scots.' So taking a chance that this may be true, I'm hoping you can steer me in a direction that may help me locate his birth. He was married to an English woman in 1855 and emmigrated to the US in November, 1855. I found a record in the 1841 Scotland census  that could indicate that he was living back in Scotland at that time, since his parrents were both of Scottish birth. Per 1841 Scotland census, father's name would be Patrick and mother's name would be Jane.  Last name "Mcmillan." I appreciate your attention to this request. I realize it may not be possible to locate the record, but I am hoping this might be a good way to locate his birth records.  Thank you,

You say John married in 1885. What was the name of the woman he married? What religious denomination were they? The civil indexes for England, Wales & Scotland and for Non RC marriages in Ireland are all on-line for 1855 and so it should be possible to look for the marriage fairly easily.

Birth registration didn?t start in Ireland till 1864 so you won?t get a birth certificate for John but you might find his baptism if you know his denomination and where he came from (which you might get from the marriage certificate).

You appear to say you think he was Ulster Scots but also speak of his parents being Scottish. Generally the Ulster Scots were the people, and their descendants, who moved from Scotland to Ireland in the 1600s. Someone whose parents were born in Scotland in the late 1700s or early 1800s wouldn?t be Ulster Scots. They?d just be Scots. So I?d be cautious about both bits of information. They don?t sit well together. It only matters in terms of where you would look for relevant records. If he was Ulster Scots you would expect to find his family had been in Ireland for 200 years at the time of his birth and so look there, whereas if they were born in Scotland c 1800, I?d be inclined to look there instead.

Post the wife?s name and let?s see if we can find their marriage.
