I am looking for any information about James O'Brien and Ann O'Halloran who had a daughter Bridget.Ann and Bridget came to New Zealand in 1874when bridget was 10years old.I cannot find any traces of James coming with them .On Anns death certificate it tells me that he was deceasd so I am persuming he died before they came to New Zealand.

Hi,
Thank you for your message.
Civil registration became mandatory in Ireland in 1864 so if James had died after this date (which is very likely considering this is the year his daughter was born) you should be able to find a record of it in civil records. Civil records are available from the General Register?s Office in Dublin. Here is their website:

You can search the indexes to these records online at:

Catholic church records recorded deaths in the parish up until 1864, so if he died before this year you may be able to find record of it in church records. It may also be an idea to look further into these records to see if perhaps you can find James and Ann?s marriage certificate or possibly even birth records if they were born there. A useful website is the Irish TImes where they give an overview of what records are available for specific parishes:
Most Catholic records are still held locally so it may be an idea to write to the local parish priest for possible assistance. Or Roscommon Heritage and Genealogy Centre will have copies of some so you could also try contacting them. However a fee may apply: info@roscommonroots.com
I hope this helps.
Kind regards,
