Margaret Hogan, born 1846 in Limerick (unclear if city or simply county), father was John or Patrick Hogan, mother was Bridget Banna or something similar. Siblings Mary, Lizzie, Alice, Anna, Johnny and Pat. Any info on Margaret's place of birth, parents, emigration - anything - would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
Thank you for your message.
Unfortunately, it may be difficult to find information without a more specific place of origin. Most Irish record sources- church records, land records, census records- are based on specific locations. Until you know a specific location within Ireland, preferably a parish or placename, it may be difficult to do anything more with these records.
Do you have any documentation pertaining to the family that mentions any place names in Limerick at all? This can include wills, marriage/death records, census records, letters, diary entries etc.
There are some places where you can search online, however these do not have complete collections:
www.familysearch.org has a huge database of genealogical records including some church records for Ireland.
www.rootsireland.ie have a large collection of Irish Church records, however you have to pay to use this site.
As you can see from the Irish Times surname search engine, there were 228 Hogan households recorded in Limerick 1851-52:

The source for this information is Griffith?s Valuation:
It may be an idea to contact Limerick Genealogy to see if they can be of any assistance, however a fee may apply. Here is their email: research@limerickgenealogy.com
In the meantime, some other websites that you may find useful are:

Remember to post any new information that you find here. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

Hello Emma -
I'm struggling to learn how to use this website but will try.
It's possible my great grandmother was the Margaret Hogan you asked about in 2013. She was born in Limerick County on January 23, 1845, and died in Sprague, Washington (USA) on June 18, 1911. She married Patrick John McDonald in about 1865. Their children's names were James, Mary Jane, Margaret, Elizabeth, Alice, Anna, and Katherine. (The similarity to some of the names you cite as her siblings is notable.) They were all born in the United States so emigration would have been before 1871 when the oldest, James, was born.
Her father's name was John Hogan and I have no information about her mother, though our family lore has always believed it was something like Bridget Bannon.
Margaret's daughter, Elizabeth, was my grandmother, whom I knew very well, and I also knew Anna, Alice and Katherine. They were all lovely women.
Was Margaret an ancestor of yours? If you are interested in collaborating, it would be great to hear from you.

Hi Diane,
I don't know if I have Hogan relatives in Co. Limerick, but I have done quite a bit of research in that county. I did find a baptismal record for Margaret Hogan - baptized 23 Jan 1845 and the actual baptismal register. I also found a listing of other children.
I also sometimes have a problem with the website, but think it's great. Please email me directly and I'll send you what I have -
