Hi, My Great Great Grandmothers name was Ellen Madigan. My maths isnt great but I think she would have been born between 13th Jan and 11th Sept 1853 as her 1st Australian marriage cert shows she is 21yo on the 11th Sept 1873.She married a Patrick Gallagher from Donegal. She was widowed and her 2nd Australian marriage cert gives her age as 31yo on the 13th Jan 1885. She gave her birthplace as County Clare. My Mothers Aunt Pat always said the family came from kilrush. Ellen Madigans marriage certificate also names her parents as Patrick Madigan (Boatman) and Bridget Scanlon. I had a look on this site at the "Griffiths Valuation of Ireland - Kilrush, County Clare" and was excited to see there was a Patrick Madigan and Bridget Scanlon on Pound Street. Is there anyway to find out if these people were a couple and if they had a daughter named Ellen? Also (now this part might be a bit of a stretch) I noticed a Patrick Madigan and Ellen Madigan on Henry Street. I know its a bit of a stretch but is there anyway to find out if the Henry street Patrick and Ellen Madigan are the parents of the Pound Street Patrick Madigan. I was just thinking it would make sense that he was named after his Father and named his Daughter after his Mother. Im not sure when or how she came to Australia just that she was here before 11th Sept 1873. Hope someone can help. Thanks Cam Carter.

Here is the family you are looking for:-
Patrick Madigan/Bridget Scanlan had the following children baptised in Kilrush
Martin 3 Nov 1842
Arthur 23 June 1845
Patrick 28 Jan 1848
Bridget 26 Aug 1849
Ellen 2 Dec 1851
Patrick 9 June 1854
Catherine 10 Aug 1857
Mary 29 June 1860
Michael 2 Mar 1863
You will notice that there are 2 Patrick's, well the first one died in infancy and it was tradition to name the next one after the first, The people back then in Ireland believing that God would not take another of the same name.
You can hire a microfilm of the Kilrush Parish Registers from you nearest Family History Research centre, film no.979696 which will confirm the above information. It should also tell you who the sponsors of the children were at baptism as well as where they lived in Kilrush. Hope this helps.
