Trying to find anyone who knows of a Margaret O'Neill or a Joseph Campbell.  They both died about 1927, I think, and I think I have the right Christian names; they were married.  Or anyone related to their daughter, Anne?

  • Hello Mary Bernadette,

Would it be possible to get their death certificates and see what age they were when they died.  this would give a ball park range of dates of birth.  Any idea how long they were married?  what year?  Any idea of dates for Anne?  What religion were they??

If you could supply any of the above information it would make the search much easier.  It's difficult just to get two peoples names and try to trace any kind of lineage.

Look forward to hearing from you,

    Regards,

    Anne

  • Thank you for replying.  Anne Campbell  was born in 1916 - December 23rd.

I will try and get their birth certificates, not sure how but I know there is advice on Internet.  They were Catholic but I don't know how old they were when they married or died or anything.

I know Louth, the village, isn't that big, it might make the search easier.

  • Hello Mary Bernadette,

I went to www.rootsireland.ie and tried to find a baptismal record for Anne Campbell but wasn't successful.

However I found a marriage record for Joseph Campbell married to Margaret o Neill in Co. Derry in 1909.

This time frame seems about right for the birth of Anne.   If they died in 1927, they were very young and must have died prematurely?

If you go to the Irish census you can search for them in the 1911 census.  there are many Campbells in Northern Irleand.

Your information seems to suggest Co. Louth?  Louth is a county in the republic and there is no town or village called Louth.  The fact that you know their religion will be very useful in the census as many of the Campbells listed were presbyterian, so the RC records should stand out a bit more.

There are many possibilities in the census.

It's really worth contacting www.groni.gov.uk the northern ireland birth marriage and death registry.

If I can be of any more help, please just ask,

    Regards,

    Anne Dennehy

Thank you.  That seems it could be them.  They did die young, my mother was only ten. Her mother died of cancer but I am unsure how her father died.

Re Louth, the village.  Yes, there is a village in Co. Louth, it used to be important in medieval times and had a monastery and the county in called after the village.  Trust me, it exists, I've been there twice.

I will start trying to look up some records; it's quite exciting.

  • Hi Mary Bernadette

I searched the census for 1911 here http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

there are 15 Joseph Campbell's in Louth but only about 4 or 5 applicable on age or others are John Joseph.

Also Margaret O'Neill only about 8 but only 1 about the right age at 11 and she lives near the Joseph Campbell aged 8 so she is older.

As Drogheda is in two separate diocese (Armagh north of the river and Meath south of the river Boyne).

Drogheda itself is in county Louth which you obviously know but you could search Meath on the census too.

There are 2 Margaret Campbell' s in St Peters Graveyard both died in 1924. This is the primary catholic graveyard at the time. See http://www.discovereverafter.com/graveyards/115/st-peters-roman-catholi…

Will add more must go now.

  • Hi back again

I have the book of Calvery Graveyard in the south of Drogheda and none of the Campbell's in it suit the dates at all.

I searched the census for 1911 in Meath and found a Joseph Campbell aged 18 working as a servant in Duleek. this is about 5 miles or 8 km from Drogheda and the age is better.

It is doubtful the earlier Margaret O'Neill aged 11 had a baby at 14 from your previous message. In the Meath census there are no suitable Margaret's.

Ifor recent certificates the Goverment website at http://www.groireland.ie/ is the best and if you could locate their parents you could find them on the census.

A family with a sister of the correct name would narrow it.

Also in Louth this site for Termonfeckin near Drogheda is excellent with church records for the area.

See http://www.termonfeckinhistory.ie/ also this site gives names from many County Louth graveyards.

    See http://www.jbhall.freeservers.com/

I will pass your message to a lady I have contact with who is doing Drogheda Campbell's

There are many Drogheda Campbells search on Google for Eamon Campbell of the folk group

    The
    .

He was not with them when they charted in the UK.

    Good Luck

  • Thank you Pat

I now realise I am not even hundred per cent certain that I have the correct names.

I believe that 'Margaret' had a sister called Elizabeth or Lizzie.

Joseph might have been John Joseph.  On my parents marriage certificate he is down as Farmer or Farm Labourer (can check that).

Probably easiest to start with my mother's birth certificate but that seems difficult to find.  She was Anne (or maybe Ann) Campbell.  Born in Louth, County Louth, I thihk.  She had a cousin called Phelim (not sure of the spelling) but I don't know if he was O'Neill or Campbell or what.  He also lived in America but I'm unsure where he was born.  I do have one distant cousin living still in Louth, the village but he is mentally handicapped and I don't even know his name.

That';s all I know.  Can'f find my mother's birth certificate so far but she did have one.  She talked about it and produced it on one occasion along with her parents marriage certificate, to prove her legitimacy.  so it does exist.
