I have researched my Conaty family to County Cavan. They state on the census records and passenger lists they came from County Cavan. I can't do much further research unless I find the parish. I did find one listing that states John Conaty was in the townland of kilinect? In county Cavan. Can anyone help me find the parish? I have searched the tithe applotment books and found a Conaty in Lurgin parish but I am not sure its my Conaty. I just don't know where to start. The problem has been mainly because my Conaty family left Ireland for the USA in early 1800's around 1826 pre-famine times. My Conaty was born around 1804 in Co. Cavan so his parents had to be born in late 1700's. I know 2 brothers and possibly 4 sailed to America Richard, John, Thomas and Bernard Conaty all arriving 1824 to 1826 from Liverpool, born in County Cavan. I have to believe some family stayed behind and there were no women that seemed to sail. All Conaty men were in late teens early 20's when they sailed to America. I have to believe some stayed behind but I can find no trace. All were unmarried but they did marry Irish women once they landed in New York. Only surname I have for the wives is Rose Keenan and Mary Shannahan. the only other thing I can think of is that around the time of the Conaty Boy's birth between 1803 to 1808 there was quite a bit of conflict around Cavan and in Ireland in general with Irish boys being taken and supposedly sold, as well as a big battle around that area in 1798 and such. I am not that good at my Irish facts...sorry. But I did read of the turmoil. So maybe its possible the Family wanted the boys to leave or their parents had been injured or killed and the boys left. One interesting note is that they were not indentured servants and they paid for their own passage to America. The only Conaty I found who was in Cavan, born about 1784 who could be the father of these Conaty boys was a John Conaty who was an apothecary and a Bryan Conaty who appeared to have quite a few acres. So now where do I go from here? John Conaty states on his apothecary apprentice papers he was from the townland of killanect. It may not be spelled correctly but can anyone tell me what parish that is in? I am planning a trip to Ireland in August of 2013. thank you for any help,
Rebecca Conaty Allen

Rebecca, My great great grandmother was Brigit Conaty (1836-1902) who married Eugene Galligan. They lived in Kilnaleck, Ireland and had a general store there. Around the 1950s a Maisie Conaty ran the store. I have no further info on the Conaty's.

Hi Rebecca. I think you might be looking for the townland of Kilnaleck in County Cavan, barony of Castlerahan, civil parish of Crosserlough, poor law union of Cavan. There is a Town by the same name, a townland of that name, and a second townland of Kilnaleck, in the civil parish of Annagh, and Baroy of Lower Loughtee. There is a Catholic parish of Crosserlough, and a parish of Annagh. Go to the National Library of Ireland site to look for Catholic parish records: registers.nli.ie/ Best of luck
