I am researching my great grandfather, James Thompson, who arrived in Australia in approx 1861 as a baby along with his mother Sarah (nee Hutchinson) and father John Thompson. They went on to have another son in Australia who also lived in the Sydney area.
The father was either a clerk or farm hand, depending on what document you refer to! He could read and write as this was written in his passenger listing paperwork.
The son James became a Drapers Assistant.
His brother, named Thomas Henry I believe, was into boat building in Sydney.
They were from County Armargh and on a prison document found for James from 1911 he had down he was from Belfast and arrived in Australia on board the ship Switzerland.
John Thompson was by looks born in 1831 and the mother Sarah (nee Hutchinson) born in 1834 (Both these dates derived from ages on passenger listing)
Any connection to anyone still residing in Irelend would be lovely!

Hi,
Thank you for your message. I hope that someone connected to the family contacts you.
In the meantime, there seems to be a bit of confusion over where James was from as Belfast is in Antrim/Down not Co. Armagh. Your research will be easier if you can narrow down a specific place of origin.
Have you tried serching for some record of James or his parents at www.familysearch.org ? You could also try searching http://armagh.rootsireland.ie/ However yo uhave to pay to view records on this site.
It may be an idea to contact Armagh Ancestry to see if they can be of any assistance, however a fee may apply. Here is their email: researcher@armagh.gov.uk
Remember to post any new information that you find here. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.
Kind regards,
