Thank you so much!  How wonderful to find not only pictures of  William "Billy" "Willie" Luby but to also find some of his stories as well!  Can't help but think how thrilled my cousin Beulah "Billie" Pearl Shanahan Murrie (may she rest in peace) would have been to have made this discovery with me.  Billie was "our" story teller in our Shanahan / Luby family and it would have tickled her no end to find another Luby relative (also named Billie!) who loved to tell write and tell stories as much as she did.  

I can't help but wonder if the Mary Fleming pictured with him in the photo above (Gurteen oldest and youngest) might not be his sister Mary?  Frustrating as there is a whole article there written about a conversation with Mary Fleming (that talks a great deal about her husband John Fleming's family, when they married (July 1943), etc.) but not once does it mention Mary Fleming's MAIDEN name!  Grrrr!

Mary returned home in September 1943, so it seems she was married in England. John Fleming married Mary Davis in Birmingham registration district, September quarter 1943.

Cannot help with William Luby. Perhaps one of the members local to Cloonfad can assist.

Yes, thanks, I see that now, Mary Fleming (wife of John W Fleming married in Jul 1943 in Birmingham England) and that her maiden name is DAVIS rather than LUBY, so she is NOT the sister of William "Billy" Luby!  I am going to try writing to the editor of the Cloonfad Parish Magazine to see if perhaps he can put me in touch with any LUBY family members still living locally in the area.  But I thank you kindly for your assistance!  Much appreciated!

My name is Kathy.  I reside with my husband and our little girl in South Bend, IN. 

My Grandmother was born of Mary Ellen Luby from Roscommon.  

My husband and I made the discovery while on our honeymoon in 2007 - today being our 6th anniversary.

We sat in the home of our cousins and spoke to them face to face.  Kevin Luby is the one who has become the family archivist for us.  There is another cousin who lives in, I believe, London, who is also very well-informed of much of the family tree.  I don't have her name, but another one of our cousins, from Chicago, has been in contact with her and has a lot on paper.  I will try to get the information.

Thank you so much for your reply!  It would be so wonderful if you could put me in touch with the Luby cousin in London!  I've only had two emails from Kevin Luby and although he relayed to me that his grandfather William "Billy" Luby mentioned both the Shanahan and Luby familys of Mississippi, (even specifically mentioning my great grandmother Sallie Moina Shanahan and her husband Daniel Freeze by name), I still cannot "connect the dots" to Kevin's Luby family from Roscommon.  I wrote back to him immediately seeking further more detailed information, but as Kevin seemed rather reluctant to correspond I've not pressed him.  So if there is another Luby family member in London who has done research and might be more willing or better able to help, I'd dearly love to get in touch with them!

Dear Clare,

Thank you for your offer of help for I surely need it.  Despite making initial contact with Kevn Luby of Gurteen Cloonfad Co Roscommon (grandson of William "Billy" Patrick Luby), and some of his relatives that replied to me here on this site, follow through on their part to my inquiries has has not occured and I have not been able without their assistance to figure out who William "Billy" Patrick Luby (1910-1997) was married to, nor when or where he married, nor how many children he may have had.    

I "suspect" that William "Billy" Patrick Luby had at least two sons; one possibly named John "Alo" Luby and the other possibly named William Gabriel Luby (who possibly married Catherine "Kathleen" A Breslin" circa Apr - Jun 1969 in Brent, London, England) and that William Gabriel Luby and Catherine "Kathleen" Breslin might be the parents of the Kevin Luby of Gurteen Cloonfad Co Roscommon who originally contacted me, but it's about as clear as mud to me.   

It would surely help me to find the obituary or a death record for William "Billy" Patrick Luby, etc.  So if you've got some resources that you could check or point me in the right direction, I would be ever so grateful for your help!

Mary died Nov 19th 1993 aged 76

William died Oct 1st 1997

John died Oct 30th 1867 aged 87

According to Ancestry my 3rd great aunt is the Margaret Groarke originally referenced. She is the sister of my second great grandfather Edward Groarke who had Ann Groarke (Waldron) my great grandmother. My granny’s name is Mary Woods (Groarke) of Cuiltyboe. She moved to Chicago very young. Her mother Anne died when she was was only 3 and her father, Patrick Woods, my great grandfather was sort of a grifter with not a lot of background. Limerick I think. My granny was mainly raised by distant relatives, Naughtons, in Chicago. My name is Patrick and I live in Chicago. I find all of this very interesting.
