My great, great grandfather Thomas Cassells (went also by Carson) was born in approximately 1841 in Dublin, Ireland. I am unable to find Thomas' birth record, any record of siblings or parents. I have found his marriage to Eliza Donnelly in Helensborough, Dunbartonshire, Scotland and recorded his parents were listed as James Cassells and Mary Rork.  Thomas, Eliza and two sons immigration to Canada in 1873.  They lived in London, Ontario, Canada and I have found all that information but nothing else in Ireland or Scotland.

  • Hi Carole,

I searched births/baptisms on rootsireland.ie for Thomas 1841 + or - with parents' names you gave and the only a match was Castles in Westmeath in 1836 (attached). I also tried Carson with no luck

Are you sure about the Dublin birthplace?

  • Thank you for your response.  I have the marriage certificate for Thomas Cassells and Eliza Donnelly and this is where I obtained his approximate year of birth and where he was born.  I am running out of ideas.  If I knew the parish I believe some records are still with the churches?  Thanks for your assistance.

  • Hi Carole,

I searched for the marriage of James Cassells and Mary Rork and got the attached match - in Westmeath.

The children of James and Mary are also attached.

    Hope this helps.

  • Thanks so much for the information.  I will send it to my cousin in Texas.  We had only been looking at Dublin going strictly by what the certificate had stated.  This also means that James and Mary are older than what we thought.  It's interesting Thomas and Eliza named their children Thomas, James, John  and Ellen - all the names of Thomas' siblings.

  • The evidence looks irrefutable to me Carole.

You can purchase the details of the marriage and maybe one of the births (Thomas?) from rootsireland for a few dollars. The marriage record will give James & Mary's parents' names and the parish. You can work back a few more generations hopefully. The birth cert will have the parish also.

There are no Cassells on the Tithe Applotments done 1823-27.

I have attached the Griffiths Valuation Cassells for Westmeath. It was done in Westmeath in 1854.

If you need any more help just reply.

  • Dear Col

Thanks again.  I am definitely going to purchase the marriage information as well as Thomas' birth from rootsireland.  Who would have thought Dublin was not the correct location.  Hopefully now we can track Thomas' siblings and then find out more about Eliza Donnelly.
