  • Hi,

Thank you very much for your message.

Have you tried looking at church records for more information?

Most Catholic records are held locally so you may need to write to the local parish priest for possible assistance. One website that you may find useful is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. It also shows you where copies of the records are available. For Taunagh parish, follow this link:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&CityCounty=Sligo&parish=Taunagh&churchid=565

As you can see from the above link Sligo Heritage and Genealogical Centre have copies available. If you would like to contact them here is their email, however please note a fee may apply: heritagesligo@eircom.net

Most surviving Church of Ireland records are still held by the local clergy, although some are in the National Archives of Ireland and others are in the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. Here are their websites: http://www.nationalarchives.ie/ and http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42

Lists of these surviving registers can also be found at the National Library of Ireland.

You could also check for record of the family in the land records pertaining to Ireland in the 19th century. There are two:

The Tithe Applotment Books (1823-1838) found at http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp

    and Griffith?s Valuation (1848-1864) found at http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

Have you tried looking for them in US census records and other official documents? This may help you narrow down when they arrived in the US. You should check the US National Archives for more information on such documents and also for immigration records. Here is the link:

  • I was interested to see this post regarding James Haley.  My relatives Patrice Haley (or Healy) and his father  (Cornelius) also emigrated to Pennsylvania.  I only recently received information indicating they might have lived near Tawnagh (marriage to Honor Breheny (or Judge).  I've been unable to connect these relatives with any other immigrants to the US.  Are they possibly related?  The name was definitely Haley by the time they were in Pennsylvania in the 1860's  but am not at all certain it started as Haley.  I too have been unable to determine  from which port they emigrated or the year. Though there is some indication Patrick emigrated @1852. Did sligo residents tend to emigrate from Ireland to the US from a particular port? Patrice Halbach

  • Did the James that you are looking for live in Scranton, Pa.? My GGGrandfather Dominick had a brother, James who lived in Scranton though I don't know much about him. He was born in Feb, 1819 in Riverstown according to the records provided by the Sligo County Heritage Center at the rootsireland site. He appears on a census in 1860 and a Civil War registration page and the 1900 census in Scranton, Pa
