Our volunteers will need some more information to see if they can assist you with your family. I assume Michael and Mary married? Do you have an approximate year? Any children? When did they leave Ireland (if they did). Civil registration did not begin in Ireland until 1864. Early 19th Church records are available for some locales. Were they Roman Catholic? Any other information would be helpful.

Dear Roger,
Thank you so much for responding. Yes Michael and Mary were married and had at least one child named Patrick who was born march 3, 1854. I don't think they left Ireland but Patrick did I would say around 1870s. Yes they were Roman Catholic . I will try and find more info if I can. Once again thank you so much for helping. I would like to come to Ireland and see where my family started. It would be nice to know where they lived were buried. Thanks again. Gene

The 1856 Griffiths Evaluation head of household listing for Co. Cavan showed 4 Michael McMahons and 1 Michael Mahon. Assuming he was captured in the survey (not all head of households were), he could be one of the last four below (I'm discounting the first record). As you can see 3 of the 4 lived in the same civil parish in different areas. Enniskeen is the most eastern parish in Cavan. I would take this information as very soft leads for now. Civil registration of births, marriage and deaths did not start until 1864 which limits research.
Any of the location names below sound familiar? Do you have Patrick's obituary or death record?

Dear Roger,
Yes I do have Patricks death certificate but it only says he was born in Co. Cavan, Ireland as well as Mary Mahoney his wife. He died Jan 3rd, 1916. I'm still working on getting you more info.
Thanks Gene

Roger,
It appears I made a mistake.....Michaels son Patrick married Mary E. Mahoney her parents were Daniel Mahoney and Mary Desmond of Co. Cavan. Michael also married a girl named Mary but I don't have a maiden name for her. It was not on Patricks death certificate. Patrick and Mary left Ireland in the 1870s....... I hope some of this helps...... Thanks Gene

Roger,
The Michaels that you listed.....is there a way to find out if any of them married a Mary ??

No. The Griffiths Valuation was a tax survey. The British government was interested in the land holdings and the related taxes due and only captured the name of the head of household. They were conducting censuses every 10 years 1821, 1831 etc. and the family members were captured in those efforts. Unfortunately all of the 19th century censuses were destroyed which makes pre 1864 research so difficult.
Have you visited a Mormon Family Histroy Center? The Mormons did microfilm the Catholic records for the Enniskeen area although there is a gap between 1854 and 1864 for baptisms. One thought is to order the film online from Salt Lake City and have it sent to an FHC near you.
