I am looking for information on my 4 x great grandmother, Sarah Moore.Sarah was supposedly born 1813 in Eden Temrey, County Cavan, the daughter of William Moore and Jane Johnstone and had a brother whose name is not known. William Moore was supposedly a hospital surgeon. Sarah's parents died when she was nine years old and was raised by an aunt and her grandmother Johnstone. Sarah Moore married James Henry Smith Julty 2, 1832 in York, Upper Canada. William Moore had a brother, Charles who emigrated to Canada around 1816-1818 ansd settled in what was then Upper Canada.James Henry Smith was born about 1800 in Mowhill, County Cavan and supposedly came to Canada about 1828, and he may have been a shoemaker/cordwainer. Any help in finding more information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Mark,
Thank you very much for your message. I hope that someone with information makes a connection with you and helps you to further your research
Unfortunately, it may be difficult to find information without a more specific place of origin. Most Irish record sources- church records, land records, census records- are based on specific locations. Until you know a specific location within Ireland, preferably a parish or placename, it may be difficult to do anything more with these records.
I have tried searching for anything that sounds like Eden Temrey however I cannot find any reference to it. Here is a list of all the townlands in Co. Cavan and the parish they are found in, but nothing is really standing out as a possibility:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_townlands_of_County_Cavan
I also could not find a Mowhill in Cavan, however there is a Mohill in Co. Leitrim:
There are some places where you can search online for records, however these websites do not have complete collections:
www.familysearch.org has a huge database of genealogical records including some church records for Ireland.
www.rootsireland.ie have a large collection of Irish Church records, however you have to pay to use this site.
You could try using the land records pertaining to Ireland in the 19th century to narrow down a place of origin. These so not offer any genealogical information but can sometimes be used to tie a person to a specific place. The later record, Griffith?s, may only be relevant if you know the names of any family that stayed in Ireland. There are two:
The Tithe Applotment Books (1823-1838) found at http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp
and Griffith?s Valuation (1848-1864) found at http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/
Some other websites that you may find useful are:
The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/
The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx
The National Archives UK ? genealogy search: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/

Alternatively you could try contacting Cavan Genealogy for some assistance, however a fee may apply. Here is their email: cavangenealogy@eircom.net
Remember to post any new information that you find here. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.
