Hello Kilteely Community

My great great grandfather William Lundon, MP is buried in the Kilteely cemetary. He passed away in 1908 and a monument was erected for him in the cemetary. His daughter Alice Lundon married Con Nicholas and grew up in Florida, USA. They are my grand parents. They had a daughter Alice Nicholas McKeon who deceased in 2008. She is my mother. My mother was never able to go to Ireland. I have been to Ireland and was in Dublin and went around the Ring of Kerry, but not to the cemetary in Kilteely. I will be planning a trip to Ireland probably next year. My question is simple. Do any decendants of William Lundon live in the Kilteely or Limerick area?

Thank You

Kevin McKeon

I too had gr gr grand mother Catherine Lundon b.1820, Wonderhill, Kilteely who married John Meehan Murroe. I have a typed letter in 1900 by William Lundon  MP Ballinlough Kilteely detailing his family history back to James London 1715 in Ballinalee Bruff to his cousin in Auckland NZ. His son Thomas was also an MP who died in London. My mum is Bridget Meehan b.1926 lived in Cappamore before marrying Tom Fox in Donohill Co. Tipperary. I have done the family tree and I have made contact to your relatives in Dingle in Kerry, Peterswell Galway and Pallasbeg Cappamore.

Thanks for the reply. I believe I have the same letter. However it is dated 1901 and was written to John Lundon's son, John Raphael Lundon. It is a very detailed letter.

    William Lundon's parents were Michael Lundon (1799 - 1884) and Alice Moloney. They married in 1823. I do know why the first name "Alice" carried through to my mother and her mother. William Lundon's brothers and sister are;

Michael Lundon (died 1858 in horse accident 8 yrs old) ; John Lundon (dec 1895) ; Thomas Lundon (dec 1872); (a sister dec 19 yrs USA); James Lundon. I do realize William Lundon's son Thomas was also an MP.

What is the relation of Catherine Lundon b. 1820 to William Lundon? She could be the younger sister of Michael Lundon (married 1823). If so she would be the aunt to William Lundon and the daughter of James Lundon 1715. Interesting then our family tree split at Catherine's birth in 1820.

    Thanks Kevin

  • Hi Seamus

Sorry for the delayed response. I appreciate you sending over the attachment. I had a typo in my previous messages. William Lundon is my great grandfather. I had typed great great.

I read your attachement and I am intrigued by Rita Sheehan (Nicholas). My grand parents are Con Nicholas and Alice Lundon. They lived in Florida, USA and are my mothers parents. Who are Con Nicholas and Alice Lundon Kiteely? I don't understand Rita Sheehan's relationship to me?

I am also going to reach out to my cousin Kim Nicholas in Florida. She has a lot of information on family history.

Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks Kevin

  • Hi Kevin and Seamus,

    Great discussion here.

My Great Great Grand uncle was William lundon which I guess Kevin that would make us 4th cousins. I’m not sure Seamus which line you’re from but I’m also from west Tipp so that makes us neighbors as well as distant cousins. My grandmother came from Kilteely but the old house she came from is now gone. I did manage to visit it a few times when my Gran Aunt, Caty was still alive and I was told it was about 300 years old.

We too have a copy of the 1901 letter and I met some Galway Lundons recently and who all had copies we had a few jokes about the last line saying ‘The King is dead, god save the King’. My Aunt has done an extensive family tree so I need to get it some time but to answer your original question Kevin, unfortunately there are no Lundons in Kilteely but there is a Mike Lundon who owns the Swans pub in Caherconlish which isn’t far away. He recently wrote a book on the Lundon family name and history which you can buy on-line from O Mahoney’s Bookshop Limerick, you just need to Google it. Can’t remember the exact name but its something like, Lundon, A limerick family.

Off the top of my head the Lundon families in Ireland I am aware of are the Dingle Lundons, (my mothers first cousins), The Galway Lundons (famous singer in the family), The Kilkogan Lundons, The Caherconlish Lundons, Clonmel Lundons and Ballyhaunis (originally Dingle) Lundons.

My email address is patrickjmurray@yahoo.co.uk if you’d like to drop a line. I'm only slowly putting my research together.

  • Hi Patrick

I appreciate the response. "The King is dead, god save the King". I always wondered what he was trying to say at the ending of the letter? I just attributed it to the times William Lundon lived in, but it does show some humor. I guess I can say "God save us from Obama". William Lundon did have a lot of insight when we can talk about his letter prepared in 1901 approximately 104 years after his death. It is the most detail that I've read outlining my mother's family geneology back in Ireland.

Patrick it is nice to talk to a cousin from Ireland. My brothers name is Patrick. I only met my grandmother Alice Lundon (William Lundon's daughter) twice before she passed away. She had a very strong character and was loved dearly by my mother. My mother was the only daughter of Alice Lundon. Also understand that when Alice Lundon was a teenager she went into the convent in Ireland. She ultimately decided later on that it was not her vocation and left. This decision was very hard on her to make at that time in Ireland and ultimately she left for the USA. She met Con Nicholas, married and raised my mother and four brothers in the Bronx in New York City. Alice Lundon and Con Nicholas eventually moved to Florida where members of the Nicholas family still reside today. We all exist today because of Alice Lundon's strong character and her decision to leave the convent.  She is in our hearts. My mother and her brothers have all passed away.

The Nicholas cousins own a pub near Limerick called the Black Swan. I do not know if it is the same as Swans pub but I will check online shortly. If not then I have two pubs that I can go to for a few pints. Maybe when I am over in Ireland we and get together at one of the pubs. I appeciate you telling me about the book Michael Lundon wrote. I look forward to reading it. Might get into a little 19th century Irish history readings as well. Not sure what Michael Lundon's relation is to me. Probably a distant cousin? Take care Patrick and hopefully we can continue to talk.

    Regards Kevin

  • Does anyone know how many siblings Tom London M.P had and their names as I think possibly one of his sisters was my maternal grandmother. Also I have a beautiful silver tray given to me by my mother who was Margaret O'Neill (Peggy) from Knockcarron,  Koncklong, Co Limerick. The tray is inscribed 'To May on her marriage from Tom, July 1915' . Could that have been Tom Lundon and was May his sister (my mother's mother?) Both my mother and grandmother were school teachers.  My mothers father's name was Timothy O' Neill and her siblings were Sister Loyola, Presentation Convent, Thurles, twins Dr William and Josie O'Neill and Michael O'Neill who remained in Knockcarron farming and shop/pub owner.

    i hope you can help.

    Thank you,

  • dear all

The May lundon who married Timothy O'neill was a daughter of William London MP and Anne Torpy, (Timothy O'neill was a second cousin of my mother mary O'neill). Their are numerous relatives of the Lundon family in the Kilteely area with family names such as O'Keefe's, Bolgers, Foleys,Hayes and Jones, Seamus We have communicated in the past I am related through a few of the early ancestors via the Murphy and Grogan lines. I am delighted you were able to make a connection between the Wonderhill line and the ballinlough line. I am originally from Kilteely and currently live  in the next parish. Mary I have a significant amount of work done on the O'neill side of the tree and would be happy to share info with you if you are interested.  my e mail is eddieodea@eircom.net

  • Dear relatives,

It has been most instructive to come across this thread. My father was James O'Keeffe (1930-97) who was born in Kilteely parish. His is the O'Keeffe family related to the Lundons through Mary Lundon. I live in Ottawa, Canada. This past May, I walked all around the Kilteely cemetery and felt "at home." It would be great to connect.

    Best wishes,

    John O'Keefe

Good to hear from You, I would be a good friend of some of your cousins the Bolger family. we grew up together and were neighbours, I have attached a relationship chart of your direct line to William Lundon, through the O'Keeffe line, however you are also related through an older line as I am in the messages above you may have observed the name Higgins, this is also a direct line to the Murpohy side of your family as it is mine. If you are ever back around kilteely again I dont live to far away and would be happy to take you on a stroll through some of your old family heritage, I have a good deal of research done on the murphy, lundon and O'Keeffe families. talk soon eddieodea@eircom.net

  • Hi Ed and Noreen      I appreciate reading your posts on the William Lundon message board. As indicated above, William Lundon was my great grandfather. My grandmother Alice Lundon was his daughter that came to the United States. She is my grandmother. She married Cornelius Nicholas. The Nicholas decendants own a pub outside Limerick called The Black Swan. It is not tthe same as Michael Lundon's Swans Pub. If you want to know more about the geneology of the Lundon/Nicholas Family in the US we can discuss. Some day either this year or next we will be going to Ireland and would like to meet extended family in Kiteely/Limerick. So lets keep in touch!

Limerick born and raised and have been in the graveyard in Kilteely on many occasions and seen the monument but never knew I was related to him. Not sure if John from Ottawa is still active but it seems we are quite closely related! Edmond O'Dea if you are still active I would be very interested to talk to you at some point.

Thanks again to Eddie O'Dea for his invaluable assistance in finding some of these people and meeting some distant cousins in Ireland last summer.

My great grand uncle William Mockler of Ayle, Parish Cappawhite Tipperary marriedNora O'Brien of Knockroe Kilteely and they raised their family there. I was told that Nora was related to O'Keefes of Knockroe. In the 1990's two O'Keefe girls visited with my aunt Katherine Mockler White and William Mocklers daughter Mary Mockler Brown in Minnesota.  I think there may be a connection.

I am aware of the Mocklers (all gone from Kilteely now), the relationship you are thinking about is as follows:

Mary Mockler daughter of William Mockler (and Hanora O'Keeffe) was a 1st cousin X2 removed of Thomas Keeffe (born 1851) Knockroe.  This Thomas was a 2nd cousin of James O'Keeffe Knockroe (born 1851 also) husband to Mary Lundon born 1868.

Mary Lundon born 1868 was a Neice of William Lundon M.P born 1839 Kilteely.

  • Hi Guys, I am Cathy Nicholson nee Lundon and I am trying to join the dots on my family tree.  So far we have got back to an Edward Lundon born 1855 in Limerick with a possible father of Edmond Lundon 1825-1892.  My branch of the family are all in Liverpool from my Grandfather, Patrick son of Edward who left Ireland.  My hubby Al and me met Michael the author and his two children in August when we visited the area however his research has mainly been on Lundon’s going to NZ and USA.  We have a family tree on ancestry.co.uk which should be visible to anyone on the site.  Hope to hear from some of you. TIA, Cathy.

I have had some nice communications with US-based Lundon descendants. My family & friends Facebook account is under my Gaelic name - Sean O Caoimh. I look forward to swapping stories with you. I had a quick look at your message and While you are a descendant of the Kilteely Lundons, you are related. The Kilteely Lundons come from a line of John Lundon born around 1717 in ballinalee Bruff, this john moved to kilteely and hence the Kilteely Lundons( descendants include William Lundon MP. the NZ lundons and John O'Keeffe Posted above) . Your line appears to be from John's brother David (David of the butter) (see page 21 of Michael lundons book) Your Edmond Lundon who married Margaret carmody in June 1880 is a great grandson of this David. I note in your tree and your post above you were thinkling that your Edmund born 1855 (Bruff as per 1891 Liverpool census) his father was Edward, It would appear that his father was John (as stated in his civil marriage record 1880) and his mother was most likely Margaret Hanley of Bruff. Your Edmonds siblings included : Patrick born 1843, David born 1846 RIP before 1856, James born 1850, David born 1856 and William born 1859. Their father John died aged 70 years on 8/march 1882 at Newtown Bruff a laborer.

I picked up the family in the UK census but was not able to pick up a child born called Patrick your grandfather, I would be delighted if you could send me the details. I note that you married a Nicholson and the name rang a bell with me as the youngest daughter of the MP William Lundon Alice married a Connor Nicholson from murroe after emigrating to USA in the early 1900's.

My brother, Patrick McKeon, forwarded me your power point presentation on William Lundon. Apparently both of you have connected on Ancestery.com. We appreciate you sending this over us. It contains some detailed information that we did not know about our great grandfather, William Lundon.

We have also forwarded the information to the Nicholas family in Florida.

When I get a trip to Ireland I'll send you an email and maybe we can get together.

  • Hello everyone.

William Lundon was my great great grandfather. My grandmother, Johanna O'Neil was the daughter of Mary O'Neil (nee Lundon). Attached is an image of a photocopy certifying Mary's baptism in 1881. Assuming the baptism took place soon after her birth, Mary was 38 years old when she had my grandmother in 1919.

We are located in Alberta, Canada.

    Thanks,

    Carley
