From the Grangegoman Prison Records 1840 I have Jane Power Age 14  where the offense is listed as : Felony Pint.

Can anyone explain what that means?

Thank you

  • Hi Ani,

Thank you for your message. I asked some of our volunteers if they had any ideas. One suggestion is that she stole a pint of something. Most people were imprisoned because they stole/took some food or drink from somewhere. It would have been considered a serious crime which is why the word felony was used. Another suggestion is that perhaps it refers to alcohol consumption. At the time it would have been illegal for women to be served in pubs...

    Hope this helps,
