Good Morning;
I just registered on this site in hopes of obtaining information on my Mothers side of the Family. Her name was Ann Rose Sheehan (29, Oct. 1929 - 26, May 1988 both born and died in U.S.A.) Her Parents were Patrick Joseph Sheehan (22, Jun. 1890 - 30, Sep. 1950). I'm not sure of his P.O.B. only that it was in Ireland. I list his involvement somehow in Caherlevoy, Mount Collins, County Limerick, Ireland and by means of the passenger list he came to America his last residents was listed as Abbeyfeale, Ireland. He arrived in U.S.A. on 17, May 1912 on the Mauretania out of Queenstown. He was 22 years old at the time and was single but would later marry Mary Agnes Finegan (b. 3, Mar. 1880 - d. 4, Apr. 1965, she may have been born in County Cork Ireland). Patricks Father was (Michael Sheehan b. 1851 possibly in Kerry, Brosna and died in 1911 Mount Collins Ireland). (His Motherr I believe was Johanna Fitzgerald b. 1854 - d. 2, Apr. 1911 both occuring in Caherlevey, Limerick, Ireland). They had 13 children of which Patrick was one of them. I have no idea who Patrick's Parents, Parents were or where they were from.
His wife, Mary Agnes Finegan were Patrick Joseph Finegan ( b. 1875 - 23, Jan. 1907, I know he was born in Ireland but do not know where, he died in Ogdensburg, N.Y.). Mary's Mother was: Elizabeth Mara ( b. 10, May 1875 - d. 23, Oct. 1946). Could have been born in County Cork, Ireland d. in Syracuse, N.Y.). Patrick and Elizabeth had 7 children of which not all came to America. They had a son James who my records show d. in 1973 in Ireland.
AS for Patrick & Mary they had 5 children of which one was my Mother Ann Rose Sheehan Phelps. Per the 1910 & 1920 Census Marry arrived in the U.S.A in either 1910 or 1912.
The information I've obtained came from Census' , Naturalization Papers (Patrick) WW I Draft Refistration (Patrick) Ellis Island site on Patrick plus his discharge papers from the miltary. I apologize if I've formated this message incorrectly. I will review others to do better the next time. I also, apologize for not knowing your County and how it is set up. I don't know much about a system of County' and Parish'. With time I hope to learn., If anyone can help me please do so. I would be greatly appreciative of any help I can obtain in putting my Family Tree together.
If you have need of any additional information that might helpful that I left out, please feel free to ask away. If I have it I will provide it.
Thanks
Dan P.

I found the family in the 1911 census but they were not there in 1901. I will have to look further. The parents had 14 children but only 12 were living in 1911. Pat was shown as 23 so he may have been born in 1887. Pat's grandmother, a Fitzgerald, was also listed in the census record. I will get back to you.

Roger;
I figured out how to open your response. At a glance I think you hit the nail on the head. Thank you so much. I'll look it over again tomorrow but from where I sit it looks like a match. With such a big family and the names and ages pretty much all matching how could it not be them. If your able to help me further please do so. It goes without saying if there is anything I can do for you on the end let me know. I guess the next step for me is, what church, where buried, when and where married ect...
Thank You s much;

Dan:
Glad to assist. I actually live near Baltimore Maryland. Here is the civil marriage index record for Michael and Johanna. They were married in Co. Limerick in the bride's church. Brosna civil parish in Kerry and Kileedy civil parish in Limerick border each other. In fact, the two families were probably two miles apart. If you have access to the Google Maps application, enter Brosna or Brosna West. If you follow the map to the northeast, you will see Caherlevoy townland. I'm assuming that sometime after 1901, Johanna's father died and the family moved to the Fitzgerald farm which would explain the different location in 1911 and Johanna's mother living with them. Tomorrow, I will try to see if I can find the civil death index record for Johanna's father. If you want to get a copy of the civil marriage record, let me know and I will explain what you need to do. The marriage record will show the names of the fathers of the bride and groom. I'll see if I can figure out the Fitzgerlad church. Let me know what questions you have.

You may be familiar with the Griffiths Valuation survey which was conducted in Ireland from 1848-1864. For Limerick the survey was conducted in 1850 and in Kerry 1852. There is a head of household listing and I looked at the listing for Brosna and Killeedy parishes. For Brosna, there was a Thomas Sheehan in Brosna West townland and in Killeedy there was a John Fitzgerald in Caherlevoy townland. So at this point, I think those are the names of the fathers of Michael and Johanna. See the first and third links below. The church in Brosna is St. Carthage. The church for the Fitzgeralds was likely the Church of the Assumption in Mountcollins. See the 2nd and 4th links below.

Hi Dan,
I see you've had a lot of assistance from Roger.
I was going to suggest you try www.rootsireland.ie/ as there is a record of the 1890 baptism of Patrick Sheehan in Limerick there.
It does cost to view records but you might like to have a look for your other folk there too.

Roger;
I'm having a hard time learning how to use this site. It took me an hour to get back to your Census Reports you sent me. Now with Church yoday I don't have much time to play with my Tree. I saw e-mails in my regular e-mail account from the site also. Please if I don't get back to you know that it's because I don't know how. If you send something to me and i don't comment on it it most likely because I neaver found it. At this point I'm going to try and see what I can do about saving those Census' you sent to me. I can't see how they couldn't fit.
Thanks So Much

Hi Roger;
My personal e-mail is: Madrp88@aol.com. I think my main issuse at this point is getting myself back to the messages you sent me. Presently I'm opening the general message board and locating the very first message board entry I sent out. From there, I'm not sure just how, I locate your messages to me. What I'm afraid of is, as new general messages are left, mine will move down the page and in time be added to other pages as it gets older and older. It may get harder and harder to find what you've set me. I'm sure there is a way of making this easier but I haven't learned it yet.
I want to say, your imput has been very helpful. I couldn't jump the Pond ubtill now. Mabe at thiss point with what you've shared with me I might get to learn more of my family. Thank You... and any additional help would be gladly received....
Thanks;

Thank You for your response. I'm about to check out what I can find out about the possible baptism record on my Grand Father.
If you think of anything else please feel free to pass it along. If you need any help on my end let me know. I do have one fast question, what are the orange bars displayed near your profile picture. You have 4 orange bars filled in and I presently have one filled. I don't have my feet wet on this site yet, seeing I only signed up yesterday. You got to understand, personal comupters didn't even exist when I was growing up.
Thanks Again;
Dan P.

Hi Dan,
I would like to say the bars are a reflection of one's wealth but you might deserve a few more.
The bars are a reflection of how many messages one sends.
Roger & I are volunteers who respond to enquiries such as yours thereby accumulating lots points which translate to gold bars. I think I've got about 1230 and I imagine Roger has a lot more.
Good luck with the searching - it's rewarding when you find someone yourself.
Cheers

Roger;
I've got a better foothold on the Sheehan's from Ireland thanks to you. Today, I found Johanna Fitzgerald's mother in the 1901 Census. Living with her at the time was one of Johanna's daughters, Margaret Sheehan. I wouldn't have found them if you hadn't first set me onto the rest of the family in the 1901 & 1911 Census Reports. Thanks so much.
Only if it's not a burden I'll take up up on your offer of attempting to find out the Fitzgerald Church and the Civil Death Index Record for Johanna's Father. Better yet, if you can direct me on where and how to find out this source of information, I would be very greatful. Doing it that way would also allow me to do other searches as needed.
I would like to know what is involved in obtaining Michael's & Johanna's Civil Marriage Records. I have the information you provided me with, but a document just says so much more.
I really have no idea what Ireland might have to help people such as ourselves find their ancestors. If you can give me any suggestions I'd be greatful. There are so many scamers out their I don't know who to pick. I would say the biggest needs are along the lines of government, employment, church, tax and housing records/documents. Are there any not to expansive web sites out there that can provide this information ?
Well if I haven't already said it, Thank You - Thank You Very Much. If the above seems like to much I understand, I'll take what ever you can give me. With the understanding that if you need a hand your ask me. (not that I know much - lol)
Thanks

Dan:
The process of getting a copy of a civil birth, marriage, or death record is failry routine. A copy costs around 4 euros (about $5.50) and your bank may charge you a foreign transaction fee ( I'm usually charged $.16). Go to this link http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx At the middle of the page, hit the link marriage certificate in English. You will then get a screen asking for a User Name and Password. Hit cancel and the form should come up. Print the form. Fill it out and tell them that you want a copy ( not the certificate) of the record. Mention the marriage was in 1877 and was registered in the Newcastle registration district in Volume 5 page 511. This information will allow the GRO to go right to the record. You can also ask them to e-mail the copy to you. I provide a credit card number to the GRO. I have done this over 20 times with no issues.
The death record will provide the names of the fathers of the bride and groom and where they were living in 1877. This will allow you to confirm my info above that the fathers were Thomas Sheehan and John Fitzgerald.
The Fitzgerald church was likely the Church of the Assumption in Mountcollins. See the 4th link above in my message posted 21:54 on 11/23.
Regarding the death record for Johanna's father, I presuming his name was John based on the Griffiths data. I looked for death index record for John Fitzgerald's in the Newcastle registration district. There are a couple possible records. The most likely is the 1898 record below. There was also another record for a John Fitzgerald who was born in 1810 and deid in 1890. I find this information on a site called www.findmypast.ie which is a subscription site.
Let me know if you have questions.

Roger;
To be truthful, I'm shocked. I find it hard to believe, that someone who doesn't even know me, would take the time and energy to help find another persons family history. You've provided me with tools to possibly open doors I never knew I'd be knocking at. Thank You so much. Become of you I might even become a Baltimore Raven Fan. lol I've been so brick walled at Michael Sheehan and Johanna Fizgerald Sheehan that I thought the end of the road for the Sheehan Family for me had been met. I know the information you've given me is just the tip of a possible Iceberg. However, what could lie below the surface of that Iceberg could bring forth a much larger picture. I don't mean to sound sappy, but this just means so much to me and I wnated you to know I'm thankful. So you don't think I'm that nice of a guy, don't count on me becoming a Raven's Fan. lol
I'll take your suggestions and run forward with them. In fact, I going to do that today. I'll let you know how things work out. You have been such a big help to me.
Thanks it's enough;

Dan:
Thanks for the comments. I've been involved with Irish genealogy for over 15 years. See my 1901 census web site www.leitrim-roscommon.com/1901census I'm now retired so I have more time to assist other researchers and I've been working with the Ireland XO project since March. Let me know if you need more assistance. The Ravens are not likely to go anywhere this year. Too many issues with their offense.

Roger;
The findmypast web site you mentioined has my interest. Would you recomrnd such a site for someone like myself who is just now getting ready to jump the Pond for information. I presently use Ancestry.com and have been doing so for just under two years. I'm retired like yourself, so I'm on Ancestry almost everyday for a little while. I get around on Ancestry pretty good when my efforts are aimed at researching U.S. materials. However, when it comes to doing research overseas, I pretty much find my results lacking. I find somethings but not to the degree I think might be available. I think part of the reason for that is that I don't know enough about the Country I'm asking the information from. Using Ireland as an example, I wouldn't know a County from a Parish if it came up and hit me in the head. That's why I don't know if it's worth mytime to look further into subscribing to findmypast. Maybe Ancesrty is all I need for now. I might just have to learn how to use it more effectively. However, it makes more sense that the Counrty your seeking information from would hold more opportunities for obtaining information your searching then the Country your working out of. I'd like to know what you think. Should I wait a while. I didn't wait with Ancestry and it worked out fine. If findmypast has any kind of a floor plan like Ancestry I'll do fine. .
Also, in looking at the site it looks like options are available for signing up. If I were to register, it appears the way to go is with the six month or yearly subscription plan. Howevver, when they get to talking about buying credits I get confused. I think buying Credits is another option for site use separate then getting a subscription. I'm I right ? Would a subscription give me unlimited access and content ?
Thanks Again;
Dan Phelps

Dan:
I think I would wait on Findmypast A subscription is over $100. Not sure of the current price. I will find out in February when I have to review. I think you would have limited use for the data and you are still "learning" the myriad of terms: townlands, civil parishes, RC parishes, registration districts, etc. I assume you have the basic Ancestry subscription. They also have a World version which costs more but does provide Irish records and records for other countries.
Getting back to Findmypast, as you indicated purchasing credits would be cheaper than a subscription but that option only allows you to view a set number of records.

Roger;
Thanks for the input on findmypast. I think your right in that I should wait until I've learned more on Ireland before I spend $ 100. I do have the Ancestry World Version so my aim should be instead to get in gear and learn more about Ireland first. Then maybe I'll be better equip in understanding and make sense of what and where to look for the information.
So without further ado, I think I'll do a little Family Tree work while my wife is still asleep. Your help has been most appreciated. I hope you and your family enjoy your Thanksgiving. I'm sure you'll hear from me again. As Arnold Scwarzenegger so elegantly put it "Hasta la Vista, baby'" "I'll be back"
Just an idea but what do you think, maybe the Giants & the Raves could play in the " Tragic Bowl "
Take Care

Roger;
Thanks to your help, I received an e-mail yesterday with the marriage information on my Great, Great, Grand Parents. I waas amazed it only took 2 weeks to receive and it only set me back $ 5.48 + $ 1.10 postage. Here in N.Y.S. in my County (Onondaga) it ran me $ 22 for a Death Certificate and I had to wait 3 months to receive it. Besides that, when finially received a response it was on the wrong person. I had to return that respose before they would send me the corrected copy. I'm so thankful for your help. I passed this information on to another Sheehan/Fitzhgerald researcher and I'm sure she will be so pleased to receive it.
The work on my Family Tree goers on ever so slowly but it is so much fun. I'm taking my time and tring to make sure it's done correctly.
For now I'll head out, wishing You and your Family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
