Hello,

I was born Catherine Kiley McJilton, but am now Mrs. Glass. My middle name is for Elizabeth Kiley who some say came from Ireland, and some say was born in the US. I think her father was Thomas Kiley as they appear on Census documents together in 1900, but he could be an elderly uncle living with her family. He says of his parents were born in Ireland. He came to the US in 1849 from Tipperary on the Roscius, steerage rate arriving in New York on 7 March 1849. He rented a room with the O'Neil family in Cortland, Westchester, New York and is there for the 1850 Census. The O'Neils, Edward and Sarah are also from Ireland arriving in the US between 1834 and 39 going by the birth places of their children.

I think his father was John Kiley of Gammonsfield Parish Tipperary, but I'm not sure. There is an add placed by a man looking for a man by that name as well as Antus and Patrick, and some others, looking for him, last seen in New York. Later Thomas appears as a neighbor of that man or one with the same name, Thomas Regan (of Eastbrook Maine). They end up in Galena IL together, a long way from Maine, so maybe it's another family. Catherine and Honora Poor from Case, Co Tipperary are in the same add.

Thomas's wife was Elizabeth (Eliza). I think her maiden name was Cummings, born in 1830. She was in Ireland. I think she might have gone to England before coming to America and sailed on the Arctic from Liverpool arriving in New Jersey on 15 April 1851

I've got other relatives to search for, but they are from different parts of Ireland, and some of them are better documented.

If anybody has information that can help, even if it's only to correct an error, I'd appreciate it. If you know the John Kiley I mean and can tell me he never had a son Thomas, at least I'd know to keep looking. I've also found some documents with Kelly instead of Kiley for the same person. My DNA Relatives list at 23andme has some Kelly's on it as well.

They would be Catholic to the best of my knowledge.

The McGilton's I'm looking for may have converted to Catholocism in America. I believe they may be from Ulster, but there are some documents that say Tipperary. I don't know enough about Irish geography to know if that makes sense. My earliest known relative in that line is Israel McGilton who claims to have been born in the District of Columbia (Washington DC). His widow takes in an elderly lady named Catherine McGilton who might be his mother or aunt. Shew as born in Pennsylvania.

I hope I've included the right information to be helpful, and not a lot of fluff.

Kiley
