I'm looking for marriage of John Knowd and Mary Byrne (my wife's 3xg grandparents) circa 1840s and any of their children baptised in the County before they moved to Dublin South. They had at least 3 children named William (born c1848), George (born c1850) and Margaret (born 1851). Margaret was baptised on 08 Sept 1851, St Nicholas, Dublin and I have obtained the Civil Marriage certificates for each of these children which confirm their parentage and place of residence in Dublin. For example:
George Nowd married Margaret Fallon on 05 Nov 1871 at St Nicholas, Dublin
Groom's Father: John Nowd, Furnace Man
Bride's Father: Matthew Fallon, Brick Layer
Groom's address: 15 Ormond Street, South Dublin
Bride's address: 51 New Row, South Dublin
We've searched on line and been to Dublin to try and find baptism records for William & George and the marriage of their parents but without any success. However I recently found a record for George aged 18yrs in 1866 when he was arrested and imprisoned when he gave his address as 15 Ormond Street which ties in with the above and his place of birth as Wicklow. This is the first clue as to where the family originated from outside of Dublin and hence this request for any help in locating them.
There is also possibly another son called John who died in 1874 aged 28yrs who would therefore have been born c1846 (in Wicklow?) and therefore John Knowd & Mary Byrne would have been married in early 1840s.
Regards
Graham

Hi Graham
There are 6 baptism records of John Knowd in all counties and all years on www.rootsireland.ie/
Dublin 1773 1823 & 1851 Donegal 1811 Offaly 1828 & Kildare 1855 - none in Wicklow
The only marriage of John Knowd is in Dublin in 1849 but the spouse is not Mary or Byrne; the parish is Swords C of I
If you google the Irish phone book and search RESIDENTIAL for Knowd Dublin you will find 4 listed; if all else fails you could write to them.
There is a baptism record of a William Knowd with father John (but mother not Mary) in Dublin 1853 & of George Knowd with father John 1823 Dublin but no Margaret.
No luck on IGI or ancestry so I'm stumped also.
The only variable seems to be Mary Byrne - are you quite sure her name is correct and that he didn't marry anyone else at any stage?

Thanks for taking time to look into the above for me I didn't think that I would get such a quick response.
I'm aware of the Swords C of I marriage of John Knowd & Anne Sweetman in 1849 and have a copy of the marriage certificate which identifies them both as being of full age and single (bachelor & spinster) and his father as also being John Knowd, Mason. I know that Anne later married a John Hanlon in 1859 and she was living with her son John Knowd (b1855) in Swords at time of 1901 Census. There is also a George Noud married to Marcella Murray in Swords on 8th Feb 1864 who from what I can gather is John's brother but can't be too sure since I know that there were two separate branches of Nouds/Knowds in Sword, one branch RC and the other CoI. If the above John maried to Anne Sweetman lied about not being married then he could be the same John who was married to Mary Byrne although I don't believe this to be the case which is why I'm concentrating my efforts on finding the elusive records for John & Mary Byrne and their known children William, George, Margaret & John.
I do know that each of their children gave their home address at time of their marriage as either 14 or 15 Ormond Street, Dublin. Also, William's marriage record in 1869 identified his parents as "Joannes" & "Mariae", George's marriage record in 1871 identified his parents as "Joannis" & "Mariae" and Margaret's baptism in 1851 identified her parents as "John Knowd" & "Mary Byrne". One of these records identifies father's occupation as butcher plus I have a record for son George which gives his occupation as butcher. I also obtained a death certificate for John Knowd who died in 1874 aged 28yrs (born c1846) at Cork Street Hospital which is not far from Ormond Street and more importantly occupation given as butcher. Hence I think this is John & Mary's eldest son but as yet no proof without locating baptism record.
As mentioned in my last posting the reference to Wicklow came from George Knowd's prison record in 1866 when he was aged 18yrs (born c1848), address 15 Ormond Street and place of birth "Wicklow". I'll need to look at the original rather than the trabnscription since I've assumed this to be Co. Wicklow when it could be Wicklow Street and I'll just have to keep looking in Dublin.
Thanks again for your suggestions.

Hello Graham
If you're still reading these messages, I'm also researching John Knowd and Mary Byrne, who are my husband's 2 x great-grandparents, through their daughter, Margaret Knowd. I don't think we've discovered as much about the family as you have although I have quite a lot of information on Margaret's life, two marriages and children.
I've recently been looking at her brothers, William and George. I haven't been able to find the 1866 arrest and emprisonment record for George Knowd that you mention. Any help as to where to find it would be much appreciated, as would any more information on this family.
Kind regards,

Hi,
As you know I haven't used Irelandxo for quite sometime and currently subscribe to Ancestry and MyHeritage. My user name in Ancestry is gallagher_knowd45 so if you are a subscriber then you might be able to locate me there and we could then share our fmily trees.
In answer to your above question the arrest details for George Knowd were in the records for Richmond (Bridewell) Prison Dublin dated 23 Apr 1866 when he was arrested for 'shouting aged 18yrs, born Co. Wicklow'. I don't appear to have saved the link but it probably came from searching the Ancestry database. I'm away on holiday at the moment but will check when I get home since I will; have printed it off.
My research has progressed quite a bit since Dec 2013 since I subsequently located John Knowd & Mary Byrne in Tynclash, Rathvilly, 'Wicklow and Carlow' and the baptisms of three of their older children William (b1843), Mary (b1845) and Gerorge (b1846). All details are stored on my Ancestry famill tree.
I'd also like to discover how distantly you and my wife Pat are related.
Best regards
Graham

Hello Graham
Thanks for the reply. I have since located the prison record for George Knowd. I had found the baptism for William in Rathvilly in 1843 but I haven't come across Mary Knowd so far. I do have a subscription to Ancestry, My user name is the same - bentleynz. I've located you and will sed you a message so we can share information, By my reckoning your wife must be a 3rd cousin, once removed, to my husband.
I look forward to hearing back from you after your holiday.
Kind regards,
Bentleynz
