Trying to locate any Irish information on Denis Lyons who was born 1844, County Clare and emigrated to Australia at the age of 19. He was was a blacksmith.
His mother Mary died in South Australia in 1889 a widow to John ( also a blacksmith). I have no record of John ever being in Australia. I do not know what Mary's maiden name is.
Denis married Ellen Barry in 1876 in Mount Gambier, South Australia and had 14 children. He died in 1930.

Hi again Karen.
Galway and Clare are two different counties. It may be difficult to find information on Denis without knowing a specific place of origin as most Irish records are based on specific places usually a parish.
There are some places where you can search online, however these websites do not have complete collections:
www.familysearch.org has a huge database of genealogical records including some church records for Ireland.
www.rootsireland.ie have a large collection of Irish Church records, however you have to pay to use this site.
Have you tried looking into their emigration? Sometimes you may be lucky and find some information on place of origin. The University of Woolongong has produced, on microfiche, a complete index and transcript of all information concerning immigrants of Irish origin recorded on ships' passenger lists between 1848 and 1867 for New South Wales. These are useful for finding out an exact place of origin as well as parents' names. http://www-library.uow.edu.au/archives/collections/UOW095480.html
The Public Record Office of Victoria has good online databases of settlers at www.prov.vic.gov.au
You could also search Griffith's Valuation for John. This is a property valuation survey carried out 1848-64. It does not give any genealogical information but can sometimes be used to narrow down people to more specific places. Unfortunately, there are quite a number of John Lyons in both Co. Galway and Clare, however at least if all else fails you have some parishes that you can start with:
Galway:
Some other websites that you may find useful are:
The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/
The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx
The National Archives UK ? genealogy search: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/
The Public Records Office of Northern Ireland http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/family_history.htm
Irish Times: http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/index.htm
Irish Genealogy Tool kit: http://www.irish-genealogy-toolkit.com/
Genealogy Links: http://www.genealogylinks.net/uk/ireland/index.html
From Ireland: www.from-ireland.net
You should also have a look at the Clare County Library?s website. They have an excellent county collection available for family history. If Denis was from this county you may find something helpful there:

If you do find any new information remember to post it here-the more information you have the more likely it is that others will be able to help you.
Kind regards,

CheersHi Emma, just found your post about Denis Lyons. I'm not sure if Mary was his mother or Sister. Both came to South Australia in 1966 on the Hougoumont. They were tye only 2 Lyons aboard.Denis age 19 and Mary age 34 which woul mean she was pregnant at either 14 or 15. Possible. Mary married Samuel Selby (his second wife) to whom she bore 5 children.
