My great grandfather Bernard John OHanlon or Bernard John Hanlon left his home in Bailieborough, Cavan, Ireland somtime in the 1800s (possibly 1888) for the USA.  He was not married at the time. In the 1900s he was living in Newark, NJ, USA and married Mary Frances Leonard (from Stony Point NY USA).  They had five children named Thomas, May (Mary), Margaret, Catherine and Helen and lived for a time in Newark, NJ, USA.  Catherine was my grandmother and she married James P. Gunshinan--they later changed the name to Gunshanan--they lived in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, NY, USA. Catherine died in 1985.  Catherine and James had four children--James, John, Marguerite and Helen.  Marguerite was my mother--she was born in Newark, NJ in 1927 and died in 2013.

  • Do you know when he was born?  Does he have any siblings? as I think if you have any of them, I would work on the youngest of them to access their records

    1. Civil registration records are available from the General Register Office (GRO). These start from 1864. You can access the website here:http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm

    2. You can look up familysearch.org (free site)

    3. Cavan Genealogy, would also be able to help you they are at :

    1st floor,

    Johnston Central Library,
    Farnham Street,

They have access to parish records which predate the civil registrations or you can search Rootsireland.ie.

  • Thank you Carmel.  I believe he was born around 1870, so I will search the registration records.  Not sure if he had any siblings--probably did but I have no information on them. Thanks you again, Audrey
