Looking for birth of my greatgrandfather Stephen Aloysius Byrne born 1850-1855 in Kingstown, County Dublin. His father was William a Master Mariner. His mother was Bridget Clarke. One of his brother was Martin Francis Byrne born abt 1859. Any information on any of my ancestors would be great.

  • Hi Marg

There is a baptism record of Stephen Byrne with father William & mother Bridget Dublin 1850 on www.rootsireland.ie/ Parish is Kingstown RC. Not sure whether mother's name is Clarke as when I added that to the search criteria it didn't come up.

I searched for other children and there were 24 matches in the years 1853 + - 20.

When I added Clarke again there was only 1 - Emily Catherine in 1861

It costs to view the full record on rootsireland. They MAY have the parents' name.

There are 2 Martin Byrnes with parents William & Bridget - 1 is 1853 & the other 1856

  • Hi,

My great-grandfather was Martin Francis J Byrne (B: 1859), son of William Byrne and Bridget Clark, from County Dublin. I assume my GGF's brother is your great-grandfather Stephen.

If so, Martin Francis J Byrne immigrated to Australia at some point. He was married to Mary McCready (B: 1960 D: 1940) of Fairfield, New South Wales, Australia. He had 11 children.

My grandfather, Martin Luke Byrne (B: 1905 D: 1981) was their youngest, born in Sydney. He had 14 children.

My father, Vince Paul Byrne (B: 1936 D: 2019) was their youngest, also born in Sydney. He had 2 children, and i'm their eldest.

So, we are extremely distantly related if that's all correct.

Hope this helps fill in some blanks!

  • Hi ???? Third Cousin is what my Family Tree Maker tells me is our relationship.

Thanks for your infomation. I have found a bit out about our Byrne Ancestors since I posted that message.

Your ggrandfather Martin Francis arrived in Sydney, Australia, on the vessel Garonme on 27/4/1878 via Adelaide and Melbourne he was from Kingstown, Ireland. Shipping records. I have also found your ggrandfather's sibling's baptisms and the birth and death date of their father William Byrne. Have not found out anything about his wife Bridget Clarke, except when and where she married William, as the name is so common.

Wow! lots of Byrne's here in Australia from your ggfather I knew that he had 11 children and their names via NSW BDM records. I also knew that your grandfather Martin Luke was the youngest. Didn't know that he had 14 children. Did your grandfather die in Brisbane?

Where in Australia do you live? I'm in Sydney

  • Hi Margt   There was a Stephen Byrne baptised at Kingst. Dun Laoghaire on the 11th of August 1850 to William and Bridget Byrne sponsor Margt Moran, then there is a Martin to William and Brig Byrne on 2nd of Nov. 1856. sponsors James and Anne Byrne, another Martin on 9th Jan.1853 to Wm and Bridget Byrne with the Sponsors John and Anne Clarke.( possible)  I looked for the Marriage without success , there were seven Williams getting Married abt, this time but none to a Bridget or a Clarke.             Cooney,Keating, Brophy, Doyle, Sinnott, Donoghue, and O'Hara which suggests a different Parish for the Marriage, Having Byrnes in both sides of my own family and maybe everyone else. You can look at the church record yourself, no cost, goto  NLI Catholic parish register  put in the Parish you want and then search the register Best  Searcher

  • Hi Searcher

Thanks for your information.  I have found these baptisms on NLI Catholic Register. I've found William Byrne and Bridget Clarke's marriage in 1841 in St Andrew's Parish, Dublin.

Had also found other siblings of my ggrandfather Stephen Aloysius Byrne

Julia Anne b 1842 married Patrick Hickey in 1863

Eliza b 1844.  Bridget b1846. John b1848. William b1855  married  ??Catherine Laughlin.  James b 1858.  Emily Catherine b 1861 married Thomas Devin in 1888. Plus the others that you mentioned Martin b 1853  and Martin Francis b 1856.

Maybe this might help you with your Byrne families.  Let me know if you are related at all.
