Hello
Looking to find my Grandmother's family(and my namesake). I have traced her back to the 1901 census. Her name was Ellen Hussey age 13 in 1901. Siblings were Michael age 22, Mary 21, John age 20, and Catherine(Kitty) age 12. Parents were Martin and I believe Catherine. Catherine was deceased in 1901. I would love to confirm I have her name correct.
In 1901 they were residents of house 10 in Shannagh More/Glenamaddy/ Galway.
I know John, and Ellen(Nellie) emmigrated to NY Ellis island around 1905-1910. I belive Kitty stayed in Glenamaddy. Family reports say she married a man by the surname Collins..a relative of "the Big Fella".
I have visited this site www.cso.ie/en/ to try to access later census data but have been unable to research by name.
Any and all help, leads apprecaited.
Many Thanks
Ellen

I looked for civil marriage index records for Martin Hussey/Hussy in the Glennamaddy registration district. The most likely record was an 1867 marriage. His spouse name would have been one of the four listed and as you can see there are no Catherines. Martin was not listed in the 1911 census so he likely died in the intervening period. ( Michael and Catherine were living in the house). I did find a 1910 death index record (below) which is a good possibility based on the age. I also looked for a birth index record for Ellen and found a late 1886 birth which is likely her record. To get copies of any of these records (each copy costs 4 euros), you have to contact the General Register Office (GRO). If you are interested, let me know and I will explain the process.

I only could see his name.
I deeply appreciate your prompt response.

Ellen:
I subscribe to www.findmypast.ie Find My Past provides the possible spouse names on the marriage index records. There are usually 3-5 marriages recorded on a page in the GRO records. the instructions for contacting the GRO are below.
Roger
Go to this link http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx In the middle of the page there are links for birth, marriage or death certificates. Hit the link for the form you want. You will likely get a screen asking for a User Name and Password. (This is a program bug that the GRO has to correct). Hit cancel and the appropriate form should come up. Print the form and complete the requested information. Also provide the information from the index record--quarter/year of the event. registration district and the volume and page number where the event is recorded. Make sure you ask for a copy which costs around 4 euros. ( A cert costs closer to 20 euros). You can also ask the GRO to e-mail the copy back to you.

Hi Roger,
Again I am in your debt.
Do you think if I request a copy of the wedding registration from the GRO it would have my great grandmother's first name?
Will mail the request for copies tomorrow.
I will check into find my past soon
Thank you
Ellen

Hi Ellen
I see you've had great assistance from Roger.
I started looking for Ellen unaware Roger was onto it & found a record of the birth of Ellen HUSSY Galway 1889 parish Glenamaddy on www.rootsireland.ie/. However the parents are not Martin or Catherine.
rootsireland charges to view full records and there's no guarantee the parents' names will be on the record.

Thank you for the recommendation of the roots ireland website. Looks very promising.
Do you think their records are the same as the GRO? I know I will have to pay a fee sometime to look at my grandmother's birth registration .Wondering which site has the better , more complete records?
Best Regards
Ellen

I think the GRO will be more reliable but slower so depends on whether you are an immediate or patient person Ellen.
I think the price is similar at the moment but roots sometimes have sales.

Ellen:
The marriage record will show the full name for the spouse of Martin as well as the names of the fathers and where the bride and groom were living.
I usually get a reply back from GRO in two weeks ( e-mail) and I also live in the States.

Hi Ellen,
Just came across this post. Did you find what you where looking for? -
Hi All, I put aside tracing my Grandmother's family in Glenamaddy, Galway due to frustrations,
I am now ready to take up the challenge again
I recceived a copy of the marriage record( GPO) of Martin Hussey( born 1832) and Bridget Raftery(1844) on 19 Mar 1867.
Martin's father was Patrick Hussey who was deceased in 1867. His mother is not listed.
Bridget's father was Thaddeus(Thady) mother not listed.
My Grandmother Ellen (Nellie) Hussey birth date continues to elude me. I believe she was born between 1882-1888
The birthdate is not the same in the various records. I remember Nellie being very fluid regarding her age. It was what ever she needed it to be.
I received a copy from th GPO of a Nellie Hussey born in 1886. No 476 4 Oct . but while this Ellen was born in Glenamaddy her parents are Patrick and Honoria. So not the right birth certficate.
If anyone could help me locate the correct certficate for my grandmother I would be elated. I can write to the GPO for a copy
if I know what certficate number to request.
Thank you from across the pond.

Col,
You are an unsung hero. I had seen this record before but discarded it because of the missing e in Hussy not Hussey.
However now that I know her parents are correctly listed I think it is the right one. Also the dates correspond with the birth year she gave on her first Ellis Island processing..19 in 1905. On almost every other recoed she gave a later birth year.
I will write to the GPO today and send my 4 Euros.
I might subscibe to find my roots as above. I have been subscibed to an Ancestory.com european data base but did not find what I was looking for. Realize that might be me and not the data base.
So THANKS again and Blessing to you and yours
Ellen

Clarification??
in the 1901 irish Census my grandmother Ellen is listed as living in ..house 10 in Shannagh More, Glenamaddy, Galway.
On her Passenger record thru Ellis Island 1905
She lists her residence as Parknore, Glenamaddy, Galway.
Can you help me figure out the difference?
Is Shannagh More a parish or a townland??
Is Parknore a road/street ddesignation??
I appreciate any info someone might provide.
Many Thanks
-
Col,
It was the correct record. I am so grateful. I received my email from the GRO today.
On 2 jan 1985 her father is listed as a landowner. What is the site which lists landowners in Ireland
Griffith's ???
Also how did you see her siblings? There was nothing listed on the official record
I am appreciative of any help you might offer but have no expectations
Again many thanks
Sincere Regards
Ellen

Hi Ellen
The Parkmore & Shannaghmore question would be best for Erik (Glenmaady parish) to answer.
They are both townlands but that's all I know I'm afraid.
Griffiths is the landowner & renter's site bit it's 1848-64
The Tithe Applotments (also free online) cover 1823-37
Siblings are on www.rootsireland.ie/

Hi Ellen,
Sorry for the delay getting back to you. That is a spelling mistake, it should say "parkroe glenamaddy county galway" . Parkroe is a village in glenamaddy county galway. It is in the townland of shannaghmore, that was an old address that would usually determine your parish. If you google map "parkroe glenamaddy County galway ireland" ,house no. 10 would probably have being somewhere in the middle along the road, there used to be a cluster of houses there, some still have remains. if you want to private email me your email address or way to get in touch I have a few more bits for you.
Thanks Noel -

Hi,
Just google mapped it there it actually brings you to the the wrong address, it is on Google Maps as dunmore road. Google "glenamaddy" then head east and look for a dead end lane called "dunmore Rd" this is parkroe. -
Great work Noel!
