Henry Bradley and Hannah McCartan were from Ballymacbredan and married at the Magheralin Roman Catholic church 2 Feb 1860.  Birth/Bapism record are found for the following children in the parish of Aghagallon and Ballinderry:

Charles Bradley b 3 Feb, 1861

Francis Bradley b 9 March 1864

Ann Bradley b 21 Feb 1869

I am new to Irish genealogy.  I was able to get a lead to Charles's parents names via Scottish marriage records that listed his parents.  I am paying for transcripts of records on the Ulster HIstorical Foundation.  My questions are:

1) is there site that gives actual digital images of the records?

2) Do marriage records normally not list ages of the bride and groom or their parents names in Irish records?  Can't quite figure out how I can be certain I am making the correct leap to the next generation without this information.  Any suggestions?

Hoping someone might also be researching these 2 families!

Thanks!

Susan

I'm not aware of a site that currently has digital images of church records or civil records. I know the Mormon site www.familysearch.org is digitizing many of the millions of records they possess but not aware that they have started on Irish church records.

Church records do not show the ages of the bride and groom or the names of the parents. Usually just the witnesses names are shown. Civil registration of Roman Catholic marriages started in 1864. Those records will show the names of the fathers of the bride and groom but not the mother's name. Also, the actual ages of the bride and groom are not shown if they have reached 21. Instead full age is shown.

  • Thank you Roger. You confirmed my fears.  Can you explain any methods to locating parents pre -1864?

Seems difficult if not impossible without the listing of parents on marriage or death records.  Add a common name and  it seems like a lot of guessing with very little verification as to whether you have the right  person.

Example I have located  a Hannah McCartan  born in Down co  in 1845 . I also have a 1901 census Antrim Co listing what I believe is my Hannah (McCartan) Bradley as being born in 1843 in Armagh co.   I don't find a birth record for a Hannah McCartan in Armagh co.  Without a listing of parents names on an 1860 marriage record how can I prove or disprove that the birth of Hannah in Down co is or isn't the correct line to follow.  Not even locating a death record for Hannah in Antrim Co will list parents.

I have done genealogy research in many countries but Irish genealogy has me baffled. I welcome any suggestions on pre 1864 Irish genealogy.

    Thanks

Normally, I look at www.rootsireland.ie for church records pre-1864. Roots is a pay site to view the record information. I searched for Hannah McCartan in Co. Armagh and did not locate an index record and after further checking Roots does not have the Magheralin RC records.

By the way, initially I was under the impression that your Bradleys and McCartans were always from Co. Antrim. I realized that there was a Magheralin parish in both Armagh and Down which likely border each other. They must have moved to Antrim after their marriage in 1860 if Charles was born in Co. Antrim in 1861.

Hannah had to be very young when she married.

One last suggestion. Even though Roots does not have the Magheralin Armagh records, the records do exist back to 1815. The Mormon Church has microfilmed those records. https://familysearch.org/search/catalog/78611?availability=Family%20History%20Library

You can go to www.familysearch.org and order the film which would be sent to a Mormon Family History Center near you. You then go to the FHC and view the film hoping to find Hannah.
