I'm looking for the family of my 2 x great-grandfather, James Cahil or Cahill. He was born in about 1825 and was a solicitor. He came to Australia, probably via London, in 1850 or 1851. There are  too many men of the same name who arrived in Australia around that time for me to be able to find what ship he sailed in. He married Elizabeth Harriet Richardson (whose background is probably English) in Sydney in 1851. He died in Sydney in 1857, having run through his money and other valuables, but without having practised as a solicitor, although he was admitted to the courts in Sydney. I have an Australian newspaper cutting saying he had been admitted to the courts in Dublin.

I've searched online newspapers and found references to solicitors named Cahil and Cahill, but there's nothing in the articles to indicate whether one of them is the right man, and nothing definite about his family. I've also found online baptismal records of several children named James Cahil or Cahill of about the right birth year, and I have no way of knowing which one, if any, might be my ancestor.

Is there a list of solicitors that can be consulted? If so, perhaps it contains some education information or family clue. I haven't found such a list online, and there is very little likelihood that i'll ever get to Ireland myself.

Many thanks to anyone who can help.

Regards,

Lyndall
