My gggrandfather was James Flanagan, born in Dublin in 1831, died in London in 1905.  His first wife was Elizabeth Goulding, his second wife was Sarah Carr.  His father was Richard Flanagan, born in 1806, who married Alice Wycliff.  I am trying to find out where Richard was from. Any help would be much appreciated.

I'm planning a trip to Ireland in September 2014 so hoped to do some more research once I'm on home soil.

Thank you,

Patti Flanagan

  • Hi Patti,

Thanks for your message. Have you tried looking at church records? There are some available online:

www.familysearch.org has a huge database of genealogical records including some church records for Ireland.

www.rootsireland.ie have a large collection of Irish Church records, however you have to pay to use this site.

http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/ have begun a project to upload Irish church records to their site free of charge. However so far only some places have been covered, Dublin city being one of them.

During your visit, I suggest that you call to the National Library n Kildare St. in Dublin. They offer a free genealogy advice service in the mornings and it may be a good place to start your research once you are here! Follow this link for more info:

    Kind regards,
